Mourning doves falling in accidentally is still the best way to know when the water gets too low in the bird bath.

This one decided to just go with it and looked like a duck decoy just sitting in the water for awhile.

This is the pole I set up with the wreath feeder that the blue jays love with 2 baffles to keep the squirrels off, and the baffles work. I've seen cardinals and red-bellied woodpeckers feeding from it too, but nowhere near as much as the blue jays, they're nonstop visitors every day.

I saw my first robin yesterday! That's about a month earlier than usual for here, it's hit 50ยฐ already, and has been in the 40s the last several weeks. I wonder if we're done with any major snowfalls for the season already or if March will still surprise us.

We have been going out to the Refuge (Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge) to enjoy the birding before it heats up in a month or so. Today I saw Osprey fishing.

I had a Blue Jay Twofer this morning! I really love seeing them around.
Thumb of 2024-02-12/Murky/851ddf

I think this sparrow is the first time I've ever seen one before it was light outside, the night vision is still on. Cardinals normally come around before it's light and well after dusk, but nothing else that I've ever seen here. Maybe he couldn't sleep!

I didn't turn the bird bath deicer on last night, didn't realize it was going to get that cold. And when a possum came around for water I actually felt bad watching him lick the ice and no water for him. When I turned it on this morning, it started to thaw the ice pretty quickly, but most birds just stood at the edge looking confused about hard water and flew off. Except the blue jay was smart enough to go to the center hole to drink. I really think they are one of the more intelligent birds.

I think they are smarter too. We have them here in abundance, and they mimic a hawk's call to clear the birdfeeders. Bratty, but beautiful

Very interesting. Will have to listen closely next time the jays come.

I've read that too. We had a mockingbird that sounded like a hawk. Only problem is when he'd call, the other mockingbirds would show up and beat him up. Hilarious!
