I was looking at the guide for zip code 03242 and it makes no sense. The spring strategy for watermelon says to direct sow outdoors May 18 - Jun 1. The fall strategy says to direct sow outdoors May 10 - Jun 9.

Why would you sow the spring seeds later than the fall seeds? What am I missing?

That is goofy.
I think it's a problem of trying to fit some information into a format it isn't suited for. Or rather, to auto fill based on a calculation of weeks before fall frost, plus a window of time. ?
In your zone, I don't think there really IS a spring and a fall crop of watermelon.
Plant it and they will come.

I was thinking the same thing. Fall planting category should have been blank or n/a. Watermelon needs a long, hot growing season. You're, what, zone 5-6? Barely enough time unless you have a short season variety or can start early in a greenhouse.

Thanks to all who replied... and for confirming my thoughts. I've pretty much decided to ignore both spring and fall guides. There are just too many dates that don't make sense for zone 5b. Transplant onions on March 19? It's unlikely I'd be able to dig a hole that early as my soil temps would still be in the low 30s.

Mine has some really early dates too. Onions and potatoes Feb 11? So cold! So wet, probably.
Tomatoes in the garden after April 9, that's iffy here, most say May 1 - 15.
Plant it and they will come.

Welcome to NGA, @beebeemail7 Smiling

Are you sure you are using the correct zip code? When I google "zip code 30242 new hampshire" the response is for zip code 03042. Confused

I'm sure I'm using the correct zip code. However, I'm sure you googled the wrong one, LOL. It's 03242 -- not 30242.

I fixed the original post Smiling

Sandia mountains. They turn that color for a brief few minutes every clear day exactly at sundown. I never get tired of seeing it.

Just occurred to me — "Sandia" is Spanish for watermelon. 😀
