Just finished cutting off and bagging plumeria leaves full of rust. Had to cut them off because forecast is 5 days of rain. Based on my experience, rust spreads fast after a week of rain.

This is the earliest time I ever have plumeria rust. I suspect it is partly because some of my taller plumerias (with no blooms) did not go dormant last winter so, they must have retained the rust from last year's growing season. I even had no IDs and trimark blooming in January.

I liked the blooms but I don't like the plumeria rust.

I've had no experience with rust, (knock on wood?) maybe because it's too dry out here? Spidermites, instead....

Lucky you! I never had rust (or never noticed it before) when I didn't have a lot of plumerias. However, a combination of too much rain, then dry weather and poor air circulation could lead to rapid spread of plumeria rust.

It is said to be not harmful to plumerias but I like the glossy green look not the splotches of yellow look. So, I give my plumeria (including seedlings) a haircut at least once a week.

Last week I gave my plumerias huge haircuts to get rid of leaves infested by yellow rust. I filled up a huge black bag. This morning I gave more haircuts and I'm about to fill another bag. But it looks like I'm going to be rewarded with blooms, noticed inflo peeking out on my no ID hot pink (possibly Miami rose) and Starwhite newly rooted cuttings and more inflo on my Divine

Yaaaay! I really like Divine...can't wait to add one to my porch. Maybe next month. In the meantime I hope to enjoy pics of yours:)

Gigi, I'm usually dealing with rust by this time of year, too. But this year a series of events seems to have delayed it a bit. I had the start of what we call the "black plague" on my orchids, a fungal infection that causes the leaves to turn black and rot. So I resorted to adding a little fungicide to my regular orchid spray program. The plummies seem to have got in the way of that spray a couple of times, and so far, no rust!

Problem is hubby is against any chemical spray...because I grow edibles too.

@Cyra, Divine is really a favorite! My blooms are dwindling down but new inflos are coming out from this years new branches. So yes, I'm so happy. Last year, I had 4 branches but last month when I counted I have almost 20 tips...and they bloom in short branches!

I rarely use any chemical sprays either, Gigi. But with orchids, sometimes drastic measures are needed, they are so sensitive and die so easily. Not to mention expensive.

Soapy water and baking soda/water are my standby sprays, and work great for fungi and bugs in winter. But they don't touch the black plague on the orchids, or the rust on the plummies and cannas for that matter. Most of my edibles are grown in the winter, so there is little danger of contamination here at this time of year. All I have right now are papayas. They are up high enough to be safe.

Beautiful, I lostmy Papaya this past winter. I was soooo sad because the fruits were delicious!

They are easily started from seeds from a grocery store fruit, Gigi. Or this one with the red leaf stems 'Red Lady' is a self-pollinating variety and has been available at Lowe's for the past year or two.
