I have a little kitchen herb garden, I planted several herbs including thyme but what showed up there is a mystery and most definitely not thyme. Can any one ID this plant?

IDK if this is a likely suggestion for the location, but it also reminds me of this:

The foliage of this looks just like our only native Florida sunflower. It's possible a stray seed could have gotten into your seeds…? Given your location it's a longshot

Ditto on hawks beard... I'm pulling up lots hereabouts.

google isn't showing oriental hawksbeard up there... is showing western hawksbeard and narrowleaf hawksbeard...

there is also some similarity to bittercress... or cressleaf groundsel...

I think we are all looking at something in the Brassica family.
Vaguely similar from my garden are arugula, korean radish... Brassica rapa wild plant..maybe
Plant it and they will come.

I don't think its mustard, not from the pictures I can find. It is in an indoor planter so rogue seeds is a long shot. The thyme seeds were taken from a commercial seed package and there's no sign of any thyme. The dirt was from a previous herb garden in the same pot and nothing resembling that grow in it. Here is another picture from a different angle of the entire garden

I wonder if it might be Largeflower Hawksbeard (Crepis occidentalis) a/k/a Western Hawksbeard, which is apparently native to the Western U.S. and Western Canada?

Probably good advise not tasting unknown plants but several people asked what it tasted like and I like living on the edge. I got a suggestion from another site and they said
Italian Dandelion Endive or Italian dandelion chicory and from what I can see that's a pretty good match

Chicory and dandy lions are safe to eat...
bittercress is safe...

but I wouldn't want to try hawk's beard or ragwort...

Good luck, Add me to the list of people that would advise waiting for positive identification before eating....

Might need to wait for flowers to be 100%...

Hmmm...
oriental Hawk's beard is supposed to be edible...
https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/pl....

Ragwort... (my personal belief) is said to be toxic...

Post pics of blooms when you get some!

I also put a little faith in many toxins tasting so bad you won't eat enough to hurt. There are lots of plant toxins out there, but animals mostly seem to avoid them. Shrug!
Plant it and they will come.

According to my app 'Picture This', it's Bear's breech, a species of Acanthus. It's toxic when eaten. I'd be careful what I put into my mouth!

Sometimes apps get it right.
Other times they are miles out.
You cannot trust apps!
I don't believe mystery plant is Acanthus sp...common name bears breeches.
You cannot do better than to ask people who actually know and grow many plants./and have years of experience and knowledge.

Maybe shepherd's purse?

Lot's of similar plants...
But... definitely not bears breeches... which is a far larger plant...

I tried google lens on your picture... which also suggests shepherd's purse... & I found your thread at Houzz:
