I've done this a few times with success, but all were using younger pads. Do older, woodier pads sprout roots as easily as younger, softer pads?

I usually bury one of their longer ends and easily get roots.

I think it's likely. However, most of my observations are with the opuntia native here and if it weren't native, it would be considered invasive. A woody piece of O. quimilo is what sprouted new growth after I thought the plant had been killed by too cold temps.

I get mostly fails when I try to put them upright. But laying on the surface sideways has never failed. No idea on the woody parts.
