Betty - Bubblegum Queen does not like to set pods for me, but the pollen always sets one on other cultivars. By the way, Bubblegum Queen did sulk for me after dividing. I hope yours will bloom profusely this season. Best wishes on your hybridizing with it!

Derryl - Master Chief and Galactic Glow should give you some of those large-flowered beauties that you like with lots of green in the throat.

Another parent that has yielded nice seedlings over the years is The Ultimate Sacrifice. Here are some of those kids. Unfortunately most of them never got over 12-13 buds. But they do look pretty in the garden, and so they are keepers for me.

The best of the lot is The Ultimate Sacrifice X Red Edition. It is an evergreen rebloomer with a range of 12-23 buds. I have this one lined out.

Insider Trading X The Ultimate Sacrifice is a good bridge plant and is producing some attractive seedlings.

My bet is that Insider Trading will also pass on good rust resistance.

I'm going to try to add some pics/parents in the spirit of the post.

Margaret's Spirit (Todd)

I ordered a few sets of seeds from Margaret's Spirit the first year I tried planting seeds. Steve Todd lives in my original home town, and his plants are kind of awesome, so that first year, I bought Margaret Spirit seeds. These aren't all still "keepers", but it's the thought that counts.

Margaret's Spirit x Thank You Dad -These are all different seedlings. Kinda similar looking. The first one is a much paler yellow in real life.

And then I took that last group, Margaret's Spirit x Pinewood Lily Pad, and as a project/experiment, crossed them all with a plant called Adorable Curls. Here are some kids from that:

I picked these because they are all very different from each other, even though they share the same parents' genetics. And I show them to you because the last step in my project with these Margaret's Spirit seedlings, I crossed these four siblings last summer with the same parent, which happened to be the first picture of the Margaret's Spirit x Thank You Dad cross above. Over the winter, I planted the seeds, curious to find out in 2025, if the red seedling tends to give red kids, if the whitish seedling tends to see if it tends to have more whitish kids, etc. Or if the parent's genetics will rule and give them all a pretty similar mix of colors and looks.

One more post from me. I've bought a lot of seeds from Nana Nance (Todd). Eventually, I obtained a couple fans of Nana, and from them have come below kids. I have a bunch of seedlings from these.

Tim - Thanks for posting your seedlings from Margaret's Spirit and Nana Nance. The Todd genetics have worked well for you. I think my favorites are the ones from Nana Nance because they have such large, wonderful watermarks.

I had like six plants of Ultimate Sacrifice for two full years and never got a bloom in spite of keeping them in the greenhouse. They just would not cooperate! Dumped them!

I have gotten some similar watermarks out of White Eyes Pink Dragon. Hard to tell how many of them there are, but quite a few!

Derryl - Your watermarked beauties from White Eyes Pink Dragon are wonderful! I love every one of them. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with The Ultimate Sacrifice. That does not bode well for taking it and the seedlings from it north.

Thank You!

I did want more reds, so I replaced Ultimate Sacrifice with Master Chief and having much better luck with it. I have also had Nordic Soul for several years. It is actually purple, but was out of Velvet Throne. I just can't seem to stay away from those evergreen plants! I did use both of those in crosses with White Eyes Pink Dragon, but also with Heavenly United We Stand because those plants are dormant. I do have reds out of Red Bull and Scott Perry, but those are not dormant. The thing about United We Stand is that it only sets pods on the very last flowers. I think I also crossed it with pollen from Neon Flamingo since I have only ever gotten a single pod from Neon Flamingo. I do have a few very nice seedlings out of Neon Flamingo pollen with the same deep pink that are pod fertile. Those are also watermarked. Thumbs up

I remember reading that about United We Stand. Then wondering, how the heck you can tell which are the last ones on a bud builder? Thinking

So, you still have to do them all just in case Grumbling . Thankfully, that pollen is a little easier to play with. Thumbs up

This one is different Debra. I like the squared off watermark. Sweet Prairie Wind X The Ultimate Sacrifice

Years ago someone sent me seeds as a bonus that had The Ultimate Sacrifice as pollen parent. None survived their first winter outside. It's to bad because it looks to make some pretty sdlgs.

Darryl - I like your seedlings from Neon Flamingo pollen. I've never gotten a pod on that one either, but I do have some nice UF seedlings using its pollen. Nordic Soul is very pod fertile here, but I've never had any luck with seeds from it - they've always molded, damped off, or had pests eat the roots before the seedlings bloom.

Char - Sweet Prairie Wind X Ult. Sacrifice does have a very different look, both in color and the watermark. Early blooms are much darker and the sepals are only slightly lighter then. I need to try that one in another location to see if I can get more than the 12 buds it usually has. It's been a good multiplier and sets seed easily. I'm sorry to see kids from Ult. Sac. pollen didn't survive your winter. I'm wanting to move to Indiana, and I sure hope it and its kids survive there. Here in TN they do very well.
