Char - Sweet Prairie Wind X Ult. Sacrifice does have a very different look, both in color and the watermark. Early blooms are much darker and the sepals are only slightly lighter then. I need to try that one in another location to see if I can get more than the 12 buds it usually has. It's been a good multiplier and sets seed easily. I'm sorry to see kids from Ult. Sac. pollen didn't survive your winter. I'm wanting to move to Indiana, and I sure hope it and its kids survive there. Here in TN they do very well.

Even if you can't get a better br/bd count maybe it'll turn out to be a good parent. That whole group of seedlings look nice! Crossing Fingers! they and The Ultimate Sacrifice find Indiana to their liking.

Wow! Love what cultivars that many of you are using as parents in your hybridizing! Thanks for sharing all your photos! I look forward to seeing more. Thumbs up

Because I have such a challenging time keeping daylilies around for more than a few years, I don't really do crosses much these days. But back in 2015 I was in love with Dragonfly Dawn (though I didn't have it) and purchased seeds having that as a parent. Two of the crosses of Dragonfly Dawn (pollen) x Laura Mast (pod) produced two children that I personally liked. (I have a thing for pink and purple blooms with green throats.) Back then I was interested in creating pedigree charts for my daylily crosses. Many of you have seen those charts, so this one is a repeat from years ago:

Becky - I remember you using Dragonfly Dawn in the past. It breaks my heart that you lose daylilies after only a couple of years.

I used to love seeing your seedlings out of Dragonfly Dawn and your pedigree charts Becky, and feel the same way Debra does. Surely there are some daylilies that can withstand the growing conditions in your area. We just need to find them!

The seedling parade just keeps rolling along with so many lovely ones! Wow!

This thread had gone way off topic so I split the posts and made a new thread Growing Daylilies in Zone 10a. Here's a link to that thread

Forgive me if I am wrong, but are all the gorgeous parent plants featured in the previous posts tetraploids?

If so, does anyone cross diploids? What are you using for parents?

Becky, you may be interested in the fact that when he was hybridizing a lot of dips, Brian Reeder used Substantial Evidence a lot. Many of his successful dips have Substantial Evidence as a parent. I have a bunch of them in my garden, and they are really good plants here.

I did have several really nice diploid seedlings out of Mayor Of Munchkinland crossed with Halloween Green. Some resembled each parent, and some are an improvement on them.

I am using Malibu Sunset, Yellow Satellite, Pastel Explosion, and Sour Puss just to name a few, but of course, Rose F. Kennedy is a popular one, with Emerald Starburst as a close second. I have had some seedlings out of Heavenly Angel Ice that were better than it was. I have several plants that were out of Lavender Blue Baby- but they were not my crosses. Same for Stargate Portal....

The Kaleidoscope plants from the Carpenters have given me some very nice seedlings, but those original plants were totally not productive here, even though some were supposed to be dormant. The seedlings, however, seem to be extra nice.

Nan - I have looked into Substantial Evidence. It does appear to be a great parent plant and I always find Brian Reeder's hybridizing to be very interesting. Thanks for the reminder! Thank You!

Deryll - I love Emerald Starburst and Rose F. Kennedy! Both produce some nice children! Mayor Of Munchkinland is always a hard one to find at a reasonable price, but I think it is has great looking little blooms and seems to clump up nicely for quite a show! Thanks for the heads up on those cultivars. I will look into the others you suggested too! Thank you! Thank You!

Halloween Green is a parent to Mayor of Munchkinland and should be easier and cheaper to find. It has a very similar form, although a very different color.

The Halloween Green x Mayor seedlings came out in both orange and yellow. One of the yellow ones was really tall, but otherwise similar to MOM. You can see in the photo how this one orange has a very vivid green throat.

Thanks, Zoia for the info about Halloween Green. Thank You!

Deryll - That orange one is stunning! What is the size of the blooms?

Thanks, Zoia for the info about Halloween Green.... but it doesn't appear in the Plants Database that they are related. Thinking

Thanks! Flowers are under 4", but I really didn't measure them. There were about 20 of those seedlings to start with, but I have taken out a few that were weak plants.... I liked the yellow ones, but would prefer a different shade of yellow- more towards cream. You can just barely see another orange one in the photo. I want to take the orange ones to reds and purples this year. A friend gave me plants of Kansas Kitten. We'll see what happens.

Deryll - Sounds like you have a great hybridizing plan! I like the small blooms. I love the larger ones, too. But the little ones (including the minis under 3") are special to me! I love miniature things! Good luck using Kansas Kitten! Crossing Fingers! Thumbs up
