Google says these are Clematis, but they look like Japanese Anemone ?

Its been a while since I lived in Clematis country, but it reminds me of a C. montana.
Is it fragrant?
Someone more up on them will come along with an ID I bet.

I don't know what happened in the intervening week, the weather's been favourable, but they've all been blown away or eaten !

However, there was just one left, just one.. it did have an odour, but I had to get very close to it.

@Hortica: The only way that I could describe it was acrid, almost end-of-life like: think of a paper perfume sample with the perfume on the one end and burnt on the other and then wave it under your nose.

Well, that doesn't sound like a montana at its best. I bet next year it will surprise you with a nice fragrance. Some varieties reflower a little in the fall.
