Down here in Texas, we have a completely different garden in the fall. Starting in late summer, we rip out most everything that we planted in the spring and we start all over again.

I'm looking into updating our Garden Planting Calendar with information about fall planting. While I know what's right for East Texas, I'm not so sure about the rest of the country, so I wanted to ask:

Do you do vegetables for the fall? What do you grow in the fall, and how do you time when to plant?

For us, we plant tomatoes and other summer-type crops in late August. We plant garlic in late September. Brassicas like broccoli or cauliflower get transplanted out in mid September.

Here in Georgia. I transplant broccoli, cabbbage, collards,caulliflower from Labor Day to the the first of October. Direct seed turnips, rutabagas,mustards, kohlrabi, pak choi from late August to mid October. If I do kales I direct sow in late September, early october. Direct sow English peas around Thanksgiving. Transplant onions in early December.

Mid Georgia. Plant garlic in November. Carrots, beets, lettuce by end of July. Start seeds of broccoli, brussels sprouts late June, cabbage broccoli seeds early July. No late tomatoes. Oh, I can push a second crop of bush beans if I get them planted in the next week or two. Sometimes I may have to cover with row cover if there is an early frost. I have successfully planted summer squash late July as well.

Farmerdill, what part of Georgia are you in? I'm just south of Atlanta. I'm fairly new to the south so I'm going by what I have done and what another farmer has told me.

Augusta. I also grow beans and squash in late summer ( September harvest) fall does not start until late Sepetemebr so I don't consider them fall vegetables. Peppers eggplants okra southern peas etc continue producing until late September. February and March are my low harvest months. January the only month I am not planting under normal circumstances.

North Shore Of Long Island, NY here. Some years I am ambitious and plant for Fall, others years not so much.

I do sugar snap pears most years. In fact those get planted at the end of July. Tomatoes usually produce here till end of September, maybe later. Then they are done till new ones next spring.

But Brocolli can be started for a fall crops, many types of greens also And I already have my area fixed up to plant turnips at the end of the month.

Central Piedmont, North Carolina. This is really my first year doing any real veggie gardening, so I hesitate to contribute until I see how it turns out!

My spring/summer veggies were great this year due to consistent, but light, rain. I've had more cukes and squash than I can handle, but those plants are all starting to look pretty terrible (powdery mildew, etc.), so I'll probably pull them and replace with fall crops in the next month. I've started some brussels sprouts from seed and hope to transplant out in a month or so, and this week I direct sowed some sugar snap peas, carrots and cabbage. Will probably direct sow radishes in another month too. I have a small garden but I'm trying to find ways to diversify our harvest!

It's so nice to come to these forums and read other peoples' gardening problems! As a beginner, it's easy to feel that I'm just doing everything wrong...

As long as your getting lots of harvest you must be doing everything right. Powdery mildews are a common garden problem anywhere in the humid east and most of us end up with at least some.

My zucchini all came down with powdery mildew and I had to start spraying with Neem.

And I just started new cucumbers seeds the other day so as to hopefully extend my cucumber harvest.

For the fall garden, I started a new batch of tomato plants around the end of June and hope to have them in the ground shortly.

I also plant multiplier onions in October. They will develop through winter and the foliage will die down for harvest in May.

The other fall plantings I do are pak choy, arugula, collards, Swiss chard and mustard. This year I intend to also try mache or corn salad.

It seems that herbs do really well in cooler temperatures so I will be planting chervil, dill and parsley. I hope to obtain seeds for a few others but those are on the definite list.

I would like to do more Pak Choi. My spring Pak Choi was so good that fall Pak Choi would be a very good thing.

It is time now for me to be planting my fall peas. I had better remember to do it as I have plenty of seed.

So what's today? July 27th. I planted my fall crop of peas today just now. No where near as many peas as I did in the spring but it will be plenty. I only planted the Sugar Lace II snap peas although I did have plenty of pea seed varieties to choose from. Will just be planting more varieties in the spring, these are enough for now.

This will be my first year planting a Fall Garden so I am kinda going by what others in my zone have told me. I would like to do Cabbage, Turnips, Spinach, Carrots & Radish for sure. There were others I wanted but can't remember right now.

Welcome Pam to ATP and the Edibles forum. Can't give you any advice about growing in your zone but think you could do fall crop of tomatoes also if you get them started soon enough. People closer to your gardening zone will know more.
