The first time a "double bud" happened to me was way back in my college years (late '70s). When I was younger than that, I had planted some Miscanthus sacchiflorus (the running type) in the garden, and it had taken over. Back then, Round up had recently become available to the public and was only available at select grain elevators (and it was very expensive). I drove 60+ miles to get some RU to eradicate the miscanthus and never regretted it. Back then also, and certainly compared to now, it was rightly regarded as a very toxic chemical to be handled with extra care.

So when applying it, I tried to be so very careful, but I oversprayed on one of my lilies in the bud stage. Quickly, I rinsed all I could off. One of the buds developed just as the one you picture, Joshua.

Never had any other anomalies, even fasciation, until 2009. Now at least one thing happens every year, and I don't use chemicals (although, perhaps, insecticidal soap). I hate climate change.

Oh no! You're right, it is different. The pedicel is a different color and there is another one just below! I'm not sure what it is....

Thanks for the story, Rick. I haven't sprayed them with anything - the only products I use are Richgro Beat-a-Bug alternating with a pest oil when necessary (and this Spring I've so far only used it on the Irises several metres away to deal with aphids).

I'd have to say stranger and stranger conditions with growing happen every year. This it was the corn borer wrecking at least 40 stems. I have had a random one here or there over the years burrow into the lily stem, but this year was crazy.

Thanks for the well wishes, David.

Today, the mutant bud on 'Rosella's Dream' opened:

Looked better than I expected, to be honest. Mostly well-formed, except for the fact that it's clearly two flowers fused together.

Haha. What happened? I have some distortions here around too. Weather? Rain? It could be late snow hate. We've had it all this year. Doesn't make for easy growing for sure.

Could definitely not point it at one certain incident this year. As you said, EVERYTHING has been thrown at us this year. But my guess would be some kind of weather event when the stem and buds were forming. I don't think this one was exposed when the cold and snow came.

It's not the only distorted bud I have either.

I just read this whole thread this morning and took notes.

Yesterday DH helped me dig out some ditch Iris and plant some Lily bulbs that I just received in the mail. I planted 5 African Queen, 5 Lady Alice, 5 Easter Moon, 5 Muscadet, and 3 Salmon Star. Glad to get them planted before last night's rain. I still have 2 Salmon Star and 5 Kaveri to plant when I decide where I want them.

I am so looking forward to Lily blooms this year. It seems to be taking a while for Spring to get here.
