I thought the same thing when Joann said "similar to facebook or twitter". I don't want to see this site become like other media sites, but I do see the value in this idea, and have used it myself already. Here's to hoping it doesn't get over used.

Exactly. Well said.

I still use FB but there are a lot of things about it I HATE. I choose to sort threads by most recent, it keeps popping up most popular. FB determines what it thinks is important for me to see, so if I am friends with someone, FB may decide I don't need to see all of their posts, just some. Very annoying. And they keep trying to get more and more personal info.

I would leave it but I have several old classmates, friends, former co-workers and neighbors I stay in touch with that way. They are not necessarily gardeners, although some are, so they would not be interested in ATP. But I spend a majority of my time here because we're discussing things I am interested in and I know someone may be interested in what I am doing/saying.

We're all pretty good at monitoring ourselves, I think.

And though I'm not overly fond of FB it does have its purposes; promotion is one thing. It was a good way to promote ATP from the beginning. It's a great way to promote Ideas, the Database and other things like that including the monthly week's focus on a specific plant.

I think if we have the positive tools that social media has, (and tagging is one of them if used properly) there's nothing wrong with that. Yesterday in another thread @dave said this:

The more people join ATP and bring their experience, knowledge and willingness to share with them, the better it gets. I think ATP is a great site and an excellent reboot on the "social media for gardeners" idea and we've grown a tremendous amount in the last two years.

Very well said, I think, and pretty well states where we are in the great scheme of things.

Just like with the smilies, I believe that with the very rare exception of overuse, tagging will be used in the useful and professional way it is intended. I have faith in our community, knowing what a great, mature, and professional group we are Thumbs up

Call me old and slwo (because I am), but I plowed through every post on this thread trying to figure out what y'all were talking about and it was just that last post from @sharon that I think I might have a small, teeny, tiny clue.

Actually, I think Cubits was 2010. ATP is officially July 2011, IIRC. (cause I remember seeing a FB post about the birthday earlier this month)

@Dave, going back to Ann's point about whether the tag takes you to the specific post... if I get a system message about a thumbs up, it has a link to the exact post that was thumbed. But when Ann tagged me in a post, it took me to the first post in a 67 page thread. And her tag was not the last post in that thread, so it took me a bit to find it after jumping to "first unread."

Did something in my own board settings make that happen? Or is it something to do with how the tagging works?

and next question.... I quoted the post I was tagged in, and got a system message that I tagged myself in a post (because I was tagged in the quote). I don't much care for that.... all it did was confuse me, because I knew I had not tagged myself anywhere
