The cleats are a good idea. I have done that with mirrors and when I installed my kitchen cabinets. It was easier when only one person is trying to hang a cabinet.

Just wanted to add these last finished vertical planter projects (which I had already posted in Containers forum) for this thread before the year is out. Fingers crossed to have them survive thru the cooling temps for this Fall and Winter.
