Yesterday we drove out to our place in Pennsy to look at the Spiranthes cernua ( a charming small Orchid), which are now in full bloom. We were not disappointed, we encountered nice stands on several locations.
First we stopped to check the embankment on rt 380 towards Scranton
Attempting to estimate, the slope is densely packed with at least a 1000 plants in bloom!
Bidens cernua was in full bloom around the pond, unfortunately it started to rain which was not in the forecast. Not nice weather at all. The edge of the pond had ca 20 plants/Spiranthes, spaced along the edge. Didn't get a good picture due the drizzle. It looked and felt a lot like Fall.
Grabbed a rain-cape and walked around a bit - the neighbors cows came close to the fence to inspect us.
The neighbor's hill had a few really nice plants. This area had been totally bulldozed over and planed last year, so we were not sure we would see any Spiranthes here this year already, so this was good to see.
Walking up the dirt road, we stopped to marvel over a couple of small Spiranthes stands, 6 plants there and a few a couple of yards further, right at the edge of the road.
A piece had broken off, so I took a couple of close ups out of my hand. And the scent of these is always lovely - strongly Anise scented. A couple of years ago, we had stopped around sundown at the slope on Rt 380 in bloom, the whole hill smelled of Anise, really nice!
The neighbor's hill always has nice Lichen to enjoy. These are different species of Cladonias.
In the meanwhile, the drizzle had stopped, a bit of blue sky and the temperature started to drop, Summer was over in NE Pennsy....Fall is nice too!
Parting shot - another picture towards our place. The neighbor's barn is visible here.
