I agree.

I like planter 1 & 2....planter 3...uh, not so much..those tillandsias do not need that sand anyways.

I like the last one because it looks futuristic. It reminds me of doing those underwater scene created with succulents we were talking about in another topic.

The first one is nice too. I like aloes and that pink one is nice and one I do not have. I have a lot of them. Speaking of aloes. I have one that loves to make babies and it is huge I may have to put that up for postage.

Yeah tillandsia bulbosa is like an alien looking plant..I love that plant so much. I would have attached those tillandsias on the rock, not buried in the sand.

Hey, show photos of your Aloes, Cinta...my little aloe is going temperamental on me...either mine is dormant or just plain cranky..time to replace it. I would be interested in getting some.

Two containers .
Purple plastic bowl has dark purplrs ,blue greens,pale pink with sedums Borchelli sport,tricolor and Cape Blanco.



This painted bucket was moved. I needed to put a piece of rebar thru it in order to keep it from tipping over.Its on the deck now.

Wow, the purple bowl looks ceramic in the light. Nice plantings you got there. It'll be so colorful when it all fills in! Of course the containers are already competing in that department!!

Bev: I have a question about the plantings.
Do you think I should keep these 2 in the garage over winter?
They drain well but I wonder.
I agree about the competition.I believe the plants will fill in by next summer and I will make changes then if I need to.
Probably separate plants on the other hand the containers might not make it thru the winter..The pail will rust in no time.

JO, don't what your zone 6a encompasses during the winter. I had lived in Santa Fe, NM and that's also zone 6 but I was someplace at 7000 in altitude. I read somewhere that if cold hardy plants are outside and sort of established by late summer then they could take the cold winter outside. I would think the semps in your pots would be able to do that (they are alpine plants). The tender succulents are another story and since they are mixed in with the alpine plants then I would consider the garage near a window? (Is garage heated or not?) Sometimes in NM, I would bring certain pots out like yours (mixed) and place in winter filtered sun for a treat.

Experiment: Would you consider taking out the tenders and put in another pot while leaving the rest (if established enough) to winter outside? One less pot(s) to lug into house? Then you can put the tenders back into the semp pot in spring...

Are you referring to the big blue sculpture thing of mixed semps and aeoniums etc.?
I do have it inside now( DD thinks too early) I also read I will need to harden off these plants in spring when they go back outside.
I am pulling back from Echiverias and kalanchoe.too much trouble.
You are right,the semps will be fine in winter here. Guess I will move the plastic and tall pail to the garage.We get temps below 30 and as low as zero.

I ordered from Youngs and hope the colors will perk up and become what I saw on the website and Googled.
As we know that isnt always true.I hold out a plan"B" in case the pinks are really not what I expected.
The same goes for any of the colors in both containers.

The only thing I learned with the Semps is that if they are not kept outside in the winter come Spring they flower and do not give you any babies. So I never put semps in a garage or anywhere in the house.

I have never brought my tender Succulents in until the temps hit 35. For me that usually is around Oct-Nov. Why 35? Because it is only 35 for a few hours at night. By morning it is 50s - 70s. The few cool night time temps do not damage the plants.

Cinta: thanks for the semp tip.They will stay outside then.If I loose them thats just tough noogies.

.It went to 40* 3 nights a few weeks ago. I will not take them out again.I will remember October for the move in 2014.

You will not lose them. They love the cold. They make all those juicy baby semps under the snow.

I ordered some semps one year and they sent them to me in Nov. I kept them in the garage until March. They all bloomed and did not make any babies.

After I did some research I found what happens if they do not get cold enough. It stress them and when a plant is stressed it thinks survival. Flower to make seeds. Especially with semps. I guess it takes more energy to make semp babies and it is easier to make a flower.

That certainly seems reasonable.The new plants will have 5 weeks to settle in.
Youngs sent a few plants that were just babies,most ordered came as mother with babies.
I just started with succulents and this spring and again a few weeks ago when I saw Diane Lee Baldwins videos.
