Lemon Fish is a Gulf of Mexico fish that is to die for. Look it up. In Florida it is called Cobia and in in Texas and often Louisiana it is called Ling. Same fish. Odd that the name changes as the fish migrates from the western Gulf to the eastern Gulf. I have caught them up to 95 lbs. Now they have to be "donated" to me. Sighing!

I love fish and actually eat a lot of fish. Nothing very exotic though. Just the kinds one gets at your local Supermarket.

95 pounds would be a lot of fish!

We have a Cabela's Walleye Tournament going on here right now. Smiling

I've never actually had too much in the way of ocean fish, other than Mahi Mahi/Dolphin .. which make a pretty great sandwich! (especially when served with a Rum Runner Whistling

I lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the first 25 years of my dental career, and for a decade had a large off-shore boat that I fished religiously from April till football season. The boat grossed out at 24 tons and could take seas that (looking back on) would now give me nightmares. Starting in April, I would leave the marina around midnight on Thursday and begin fishing at dawn, a 5-6 hr. trip out into the Gulf. It was nothing for me to be 100-150 miles off-shore. I would return home Sunday afternoon. That was every single week during those spring/summer months. I carried 2,200 lbs. of ice every trip out. I absolutely loved the fishing (my catch often would be measured in the thousands of pounds) but more than that, I loved the solitude. After ten years of this, I got wore out though. It took me longer and longer to recover from those three days. At the end of this ten-year "adventure", I would finally begin to get my energy back on Wednesday and then on Thursday, out I went again. I was killing myself. I donated my boat to our university system to be used as a marine research/student teaching boat. I still miss the beauty and that solitude out on the Gulf.

Ken - I am looking for a nice whole fish to grill that doesn't have a lot of small bones. Someone mentioned a red snapper. Any suggestions?? I tried what they call here a Bronzini but they were a pound each and had to many small bones to really enjoy even though the flesh was delicious.

Red snapper is a great fish and bones are generally not a problem. I don't know how many Gulf of Mexico fish you get up there, but lemon fish, grouper, amberjack, and red fish are popular down here and are all very good. There is also yellow fin tuna. From Alaska there is always salmon (four varieties, but King is the best to me) and halibut. I guess it just depends on what sort of taste you are after. There are few fish that I don't like. My wife and I don't eat beef, other than the occasional 80-20 ground chuck, so fish is an important part of our diet.

The most important thing with all fish is the way they are trimmed before shipping/packaging. Done correctly, there should seldom be a bone.

Gorgeous love apples!

What kind of seed pod (I guess?) is the first photo? They look a little like my lavatera that have gone to seed. LOTS of seed!

They are incredibly sweet and they have a nutty flavor. They do not taste like a regular tomato.

You don't have to ever pick them. When they are ready to be eaten the simply fall off the plant. No kidding

Some times husk tomatoes are called ground cherries. They make a nice sauce if canned with a light syrup.

Franklin, I was just thinking about doing the same thing. We still have lots of tomatoes to ripen and potatoes to dig, but that's about it. I used the last peppers to make my third batch of Sweet Red Pepper relish yesterday, so that's about it for this year.

I agree

Never mind the tomatoes, which I'm still pretty much waiting on... all kinds of stuff still going on in my garden!

I actually have been giving lots of thought to the problem of tomatoes slowing down at the very end of August. Been thinking on this these past few days. I think I have the beginning of a plan.

This year I did plant quite afew determinate plants. As you know those grow to a certain height and pretty much stop growing. Set tons of tomatoes which are all ready in a fairly short period. Then either do no more or very little more.

Of course that means they have done or at the end. What I need is some that are just getting started now.

Right, that is pretty much part of the definition of determinate tomatoes.

Rita, when do you first get frost? You'd want to have your tomatoes producing somewhat before whatever that date is... (which I imagine you've already figured out, I'm thinking out loud... or as I type, anyway Whistling )

Well plenty of time till frost as that might be start of November. Or later. But really the tomatoes on the plants just don't get to ripening by the time we get to late October. I end up pulling them usually end of October still having lots of green tomatoes.

I need determinate plants to produce all during September.
