Jill I hope this thread was some help for you and your metallic edge program. Some of these are just amazing with the different forms and that glittery metal edge. I think it could really be expanded on if that is where you are heading.
Just in my own mind I am thinking a lot of the Lambertson and Emmerich cultivars could add a lot.

Thanks Stephanie. I hope I can expand the trait. I like your comment about different forms. I can't help seeing a "carnation" style double - burgundy red wih sharp, shiny gold edges criss-crossing all over it. Night Embers with glitter! It would have to have a Christmas name, for sure. I'll keep watching for bits of info. The metallic or glittery effect is rarely ever included in the desription, and I live very far from big gardens, so it's hard to view them in person, but I'm making a little progress here and there. It will be a fun path to travel whether I make my goal or not. Smiling

I'm resurrecting this thread by necropost to inquire what may have come of the fantastic orange with glittery edge?

I am pursuing this as a breeding goal. Hems that consistently pass on a heavy and hopefully wide glitter edge.

Wisest of Wizards has a glittery edge for me, even in Britain! Seems to pass it on too as a seedling on the July Seedlings page has a glitter edge and has Wisest Of Wizards as pod parent.

A good friend of mine won a "name the daylily" contest a few years ago---and got a piece of the daylily she thought up the name for: My Precious
This is what I think of when talking about "glitter" edges.

I have a few daylilies that have "glitter" in their edges---but not like that! I think this will be the next "Best" thing in the daylily fad world!

I have a seedling that first bloomed in 2009 that has both the glittery edge and teeth, or perhaps more correctly, tendrils. I have never registered it because it simply does not have the branching or the bud count that most daylily enthusiasts want. I can also say that it has only rebloomed once or twice since it first bloomed. However, it will stay in my garden because it is a bit unusual in having these attributes and also being a bitone. It has fertile pollen and is exceptionally pod fertile, but I do not remember seeing any of its kids with the "glitter" although it has been several years since I have used it in my hybridizing and my aging brain is too busy thinking about some newer toothy seedlings that I have this year to remember what was going on 4 or 5 years ago.
Here is a picture of my seedling "G-1" and a close up of the edge.

I wonder if other special features, such as a heavy gold edge, would mitigate the smaller branching and bud count. It would for me!

I have several seedlings that have a bit (not wide) of that glitter on the edges, but lovely as it is (and sucker though I am for diamond dusting and all things sparkly), if the seedling doesn't also have the bud count and branching, or if the bloom doesn't open well or can't hack our cold nights, or if the plant is rusty, then out it goes. (I *might* cross it with something else that has the desirable plant traits that are lacking, but I have limited seedling space and other crosses take priority.)

But I have to agree that a daylily that otherwise has good (my definition of "good", maybe not yours) plant traits, AND has a wide glitter edge (and diamond dusting, and a clear colored bloom).... yowza, that would get my attention (and $). Sticking tongue out
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

LarryW I'd love to have your seedling! And branching/bud count is definitely not my biggest criteria. If it has a low bud count but increases well and the new fans have scapes then it puts on just as good a show as a cultivar with a much higher bud count! And since I rarely get rebloom I don't even bother taking that into account.

For something that pretty and unique I'd even overlook short scapes too!

I decided to go around and see if any of my daylilies had glitter edges. I need to check again in the afternoon since many of the daylilies were in shade this morning.

But I do have a seedling that has some glitter! This is its first year blooming and it started out having just a thin wire gold edge. But today's bloom is starting to get teeth!

I am fortunate to have this daylily, 'My Precious Gold' by Susan Pannell in my collection. Susan has a program focused on gold glitter edges and diamond dusted edges. Her 'Heart of Passion' has a glittery platinum edge.

Among her seedlings this year is a bright purple with a platinum glitter edge.

This is excellent! What are the chances of introducing this?
