Cerulean Warbler is lovely. The lavenders are so dreamy looking.

Merry Moppet has been trying to be a double for me about half the time this year.

Okay I'm going to give in and ask what does FFO mean? And also Susan what does it mean when you said "with one being a poly" I guess I don't know beans from apple butter about day lilies but I really enjoy the blooms.
Thanks

FFO means First Flower Open. It could refer to the FFO of your entire garden... or the FFO for each plant. So, my FFO for my garden would be Penny's Worth, sometime back in May. But, the FFO on the plant Palace Of Lights might not be till end of July because it is a late.

Poly stands for polytepal and is when the flower has four or more petals and four or more sepals. I am not a fan of poly's... my art training tells me that things look better in odd numbers. A daylily usually has three petals and three sepals.
The petals are the three that are sort of in front and are usually wider.
http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_d...

The sepals are the ones in back, and are normally smaller, less ruffled, etc. http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_d...

Sorry, I can't show you a poly photo... If I do have a plant that blooms poly, I don't take a photo.

There have been people who like the look when they have to many petals, and they have bred daylilies together that have that trait and stabilized it and so there is a registration form for poly's like there is for doubles, spiders. One I know of is called "Give Me Eight" -- here is a link to a photo of it.

Here is the AHS explanation of Polytepal
http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_d...

Sometimes there is something that happens called Fusing. It is when for some reason, two buds develop and grow together, sort of like Siamese Twins. They look really odd. One time, I had a flower on Ruby Spider that had something like 11 petals and 10 sepals. Sometimes scapes will fuse together also... they are usually more flat than round.
Here is the AHS explanation of fused scape

Good thorough explanation Jules. Thought I'd add this, When the scapes fuse together and are more flat than round, it's called Fasciation. Or at least it is with other perennials.

Glad you answered that Jules. You did a much better job than I would have. Veronica if you look at my photo of Arms to Heaven you will see the bottom one has the normal number of petals and sepals and the top one has 4 of each. Sometimes called a 4X4 poly. I love the 5X5 and over ones, but have to agree that the 4X4 seem unbalanced. Here's a poly Asiatic lily. This one looks like a 5X4, but then there are some little curls in the center that almost looks like is it's trying to be a double.

Jules, I like th explanation on the polymerous link about the difference between a poly and a double. " Polymerous daylilies have the extra sepals and petals evenly spaced in their respective whorls, unlike double daylilies in which the extra petals or petaloid stamens are stacked upon or lie above the ordinary petals." Never knew exactly how to put it into words, but I know when I see one like the Merry Moppet above that it's trying to double not be a poly.

Here's a puzzle. I have this labeled as Dorothy Lambert and it is one of the few early DLs I purchased, so I'm fairly certain I labeled it according to the way the nursery labeled it. In checking plant files on DG, though, it doesn't look anything like Dorothy Lambert. Anyone want to guess what this might be?

Thanks for the explanation...Now I'll have to look at mine and count the petals and sepals. Am I correct in thinking that some are bred that way on purpose? I usually just look for color and if they are blotchy. I have a seedling sent to me by a dealer and it is such a healthy looking plant but the bloom so far is not to my liking. It may have to go.

FFO on Selma Rose. Not quite up to snuff, but it is only the first bloom and is blooming much earlier than last year by 2 weeks. Once the clumps get started, I'll have blooms for a month. We've had rain for the last 3 days. I was pleasantly surprised to see Selma blooming this morning. Over time it gets a lot more lavender/rose color in it. It's a big flower also and stands out.

Angie, I like that one better than Dorothy Lambert, but no guesses to a name. Maybe send a photo to the person you got it from.

I like the looks of Selma Rose. Louise Lemky is starting to bloom. Always puts on a good show.

Susan: SO is very nice. Is it fragrant? I might have to add that one, too. I do like fragrance in my roses and DLs.

Oh, love the Wild One. I had that one and it moved away, so I now need to add it back to my collection. It's a very nice DL. I am sorry it wasn't happy in my garden when I first planted it. Maybe the next one will be happier and decide to stay with me!

No frag. that I have noticed, but even DL that are suppose to have frag.never seem to to me.

Here's Sudden Fire. Later blooms are usually nicer. Wonder what causes the canoeing? A number of mine have done that tbhis last week.
