Berkeley Gold is supposed to have it, but so far I have not seen it.

Great topic Greg. Thanks for posting. Nice pix as well. One of the neglected areas for irises for too long. Most concentrate on only the blossom, and for that even leave out details like the tipping or base of a beard for instance.

It is also ignored by us when taking pictures-aren't most or all just of the blooms?

and Lucky Doris [Standards burgundy purple (RHS 77A), lighter at midrib; falls white ground with burgundy purple plicata markings, precise band of deeper shade around edge; yellow beard tipped white.] It has purple all over the plant and even the beard description in the wiki is not accurate.

One sent to me by Rob had very PBF, called Lady in Purple. It had the most PBF that I have seen. Next in line would be Serena Louisa and Splashacata.

Lady in Purple has the most PBF out of any iris that I've seen. The bloom is really nice too and it's one of my favorites in the garden.

I could not locate Lady in Purple. Does anyone know where to get it?

One I don't see on your list but the purple base catches my. Eye often as I walk out the door is Tempoal Anomaly.. I got this from Superstition2 years ago. It didn't bloom yet but it grows like a weed. And its base is so thick it reminds me of an Agave plant. I will try to get you a picture soon

Speaking of PBF irises... (Sorry, no pics of the foliage...)

I was back out by my iris bed today (the one with more than 2-3 irises in it), and while I was placing labels, I checked the foliage on 'Golden Immortal' (which of all the irises in that bed, is the only that was listed in the database here as having PBF). Guess what... no PBF! So either mine is not the correct cultivar (it did bloom this spring, and the bloom was a golden yellow (the pic looked the AIS images)), or else this is another one of the irises that sometimes show PBF, or the database here is wrong. (PBF was not listed in the AIS encyclopedia. Curiously enough, a quarter inch center line WAS mentioned, but I have not seen it on any image of this cultivar, including the one on the Sutton website.)

Marilyn ~ I also have a golden one that is listed as having PBF. It is called Berkeley Gold. So I will be checking against the database as well as AIS wiki. I got it from Bluebird Haven Iris Gardens and Mary prides herself on having her irises true to name. So far, it is the only one that I have found that listed that as a feature and did not see any at all. I have noticed a little bit on others that have not had it listed in their description.

'Pinkity', as we discovered, is one such. Not registered as having PBF, but definitely has it (as confirmed by the hybridizer's daughter). (See the comment I posted on the main database page.)

Temporal Anomaly: Well this late in Fall it isn't near as thick at the base as it was in my minds eye but I did notice the bottom coloring is almost black.

Even though this is an old post, it needs to be corrected. Mary from Bluebird Haven says what I have is not Berkeley Gold. That could be the reason that it does not have PBF.
