I think hybridizers are being more alert. After all, the registration blank has notations to check for fragrance, but not pbf. That would be good for ID of plants with similar color.

So when the AIS added Fragrance as a trait they did not bother to add PBF? This means that the hybridizer must point it out on purpose in a comments section rather than checking off a box? VERY short sided as I definitely use PBF to differentiate cultivars from on another.

Greg -- why don't you advise the AIS about this? I'm sure you're not alone in your thinking on this topic. It would be a good change for them to make!

pbf is great for ID of plants growing close together.

I am curious about it, I have so many plants that have PBF, I really didn't think a whole lot about it before it mainly catches my eye in early spring as they start to grow most are darker colors or bright pinks but as I was cleaning up foliage in my seedlings noticed one of crosses had some plants with it (Decadence X Star Appeal ) I got 9 plants and 2 of those have bright PBF so it made me wonder what in the plant brings it out and when hybridizing with a plant with PBF how often will it pass on that trait to the kids ??
I think the plant with the most PBF I have is (Magnificent Masterpiece) I don't think I have any pictures of it from early spring but will check tomorrow but it really stands out and where most stop a inch or so up the plant with color it extends quite a bit further beautiful when it first starts to grow.

I will be interested to see what your [Decadence X Star Appeal] cross produces. Star Appeal has PBF which I think is not common in pinks. Perhaps I am wrong about that As I mentioned earlier, Serena Louisa, which contains Decadence bloodlines. has the darkest PBF that I have seen.

Interesting remark Paul -- referring to *blood*lines in a plant. I can't think of an alternative term though...................

I will be interested in the results of that cross too!! Love both of those Irises!! Lovey dubby

I agree Lucy -- and I rely on the foliage when separating Irises that have grown too close together. In addition to some having pbf, some have uncharacteristically white leaf bases. Some have longer, thinner rhizomes -- some have fat, round rhizomes. Being aware of that has prevented some identification problems for me, and I think this information would be worthwhile to share.

MaryAnn (and everyone ,for that matter) you should go to the HIPS website, and in the Library Section( just in the "visitor" area, you don't need to join to see it) under the "articles", there are 2 concerned with iris I.D. Yhey stress the importance of pbf, rhizome shape, leaf size, etc. in identifying iris cultivars. You should check out the entire "visitors" area, lots and lots of interesting reading there! And , If you should decide to join the society, there is TONS more info, and a beautiful magazine, for members! *..............Arlyn

* footnote . this is a blatant "plug" for HIPS!

Keppel mentions PBF in his description! Calls it, "violet base". I would call it or describe it differently, but he did mention it at least!

I have two others that I need to get photos of. I got no work done in the garden yesterday as it was rainy and gloomy (but warm!).

Wabash
Lady of Leoness

The plan would be to then take pictures every other month of these same cultivars to track how the PBF changes over the year; both in area (coverage) as well as intensity.

If I find more, I will add them to the list.
