I took some photos of roses three years ago that were growing in containers at San Francisco's Union Square gardens (containers were perhaps 10-gallon size) and twice emailed them for IDs with no response ... any chance someone here can take a guess at IDs? I absolutely fell in love with them ... helplessly, hopelessly in love unless someone can figure out who they were (or at least some near-alikes).

I agree with the Day Breaker ID.

You cannot imagine how happy I am to learn about Daybreaker and Colorific, and I just found a source for a tree rose of Daybreaker that I'd hoped to find for next spring shipping! It is my favorite of all the roses I've seen to date, so it is wonderful to have it ID's and available. Really, heavenly, after two years of searching and coming up with nothing.

Now that I know what it is, I have just read that it is disease resistant but, on a private blogger's site, that it is prone to rust in her garden. I'll have to learn more, as I'm a complete newbie to roses ... but I can't imagine a more beautiful flower to get me started learning about rose care, either way.

Day Breaker is a highly reliable rose, blooming often and abundantly without suffering much from the common rose ailments. It gets a little black spot in my garden, but everything does.

Please note that it's spelled Day Breaker -- two words. The "one-word" Daybreaker, more commonly known as Britannia or Rochemenier Village, is not sold anywhere on this continent.

#1 looks like Day Breaker to me. Colorific (for me) is a lot more reddish

Not one of my favorites because, IMO, no scent. So really knocks it way down on my like-o-meter. But kinda pretty.

like-o-meter! ... though I'm starting out with the "eyes" version of the meter, I'm sure the nose will soon enough follow when my first rose arrives thanks for posting those awesome pics!

Chalyse: I have Day Breaker (thanks Zuzu for the spelling correction !) and mine DOES get a "touch" of rust...but only at this particular time of year when the sun pattern changes and that section of my garden doesn't dry out as quickly. The rest of the year it's completely disease free.
Just remember: ANY rose can/will develop certain diseases IF the conditions are right and persist for any length of time...(emphasis on IF) regardless of what you read about a specific rose and it's "resistance to disease(s)". It's definitely "trial and error" when it comes to roses. (Been there...done that...still doing it !)

Mike - You're so right! I traditionally don't have blackspot because of my lack of humidity. However, after all those rains we had in September that flooded half the state, my poor yard looked horrible! Some roses were worse off than others.. in fact, some STILL have blackspot all over them. Most of the leaves are dead due to heavy frosts/snow, but still..
