Hi, just wondering if you guys hit the LA now or do you wait until the Spring to bid on plants the most. I have some that I want to list, more that I want to buy lol.

I usually buy now. I have bought 3 already. Now I have to eliminate 3 to make room. I probably won't be buying any more unless I see one I really have to have Hilarious!

I buy now since I want mine in the spring, earliest possible. Of course my spring comes a lot sooner than most on here. There's pros and cons on waiting until spring

PROS: get a lower price because the prices may be way down by then and/or everyone has already bought them already so maybe no one will bid against you. Get a different selection of daylilies listed since there will be different sellers usually listing in the spring.

CONS: what you are wanting is sold out by everyone selling it and you can't find it anywhere.

I have paid more for daylilies than if I would have waited but then I have waited and then the plant was never listed again and I couldn't find it anywhere. Or I have waited and then had to pay more than if I would have bid the first time. You just never know with the auction.

I got two so far and bidding on one more. They are "oldies but goodies". Snow White Dove and Mary Alice Stokes. Currently bidding on a very popular oldie that I bought on the LA in winter of 2011. Bloomed as a different plant, so I am trying my luck again. the seller offered to replace it but I am happy with the surprise plant = God Of Wine

Just BEWARE of snowapocylse when 2 feet drops on your lawn when winter blues and boredom sets in and you click on the LA and spend all your budget in 15 minutes. From what I remember from the 2010 blizzard it's a trance like state. lol

I had been good staying away from the LA. The key word is HAD. David and I both took a few looks recently and, of course, we both had to place some bids. We had won one a week ago and then 6 more yesterday. (Six wins at a time can get us in real trouble with planting space.) One of the 6 will go toward the Region 5 Spring Meeting Auction in June and another is an additional fan of one we really like. So, that is only 4 more planting spots needed. My rule now is that we cannot buy anything new unless we have a place to plant them. I made a list of daylilies in one area that we can move out, probably to church because they have biblical names. I have been wanting to do this at church. The one that I am most excited about that we won yesterday is Rainbow Maker. Been wanting this one.

I have found that fall and early winter (now) is a good time to bid. Bidding seems to be in a lull at this time of the year. Bidding will pick up after the first of the year and the closer we get to spring. You just have to keep an eye on bidding. As Tink said, you really can never tell. It just depends on who is bidding and how high the bidders are willing to go. Bidding prices are lower now than a few years ago. People do not have the money to spend that they once had. That is evident in all aspects of our economy.

Just one that Julie (Floota) posted a photo of on her blog it really caught my eye so when it was on the LA I put in a bid on Boogie Woogie Blues. I do not have many doubles but this one is beautiful and will make a nice addition to my garden.

I think this is the best time of the year to get plants through the Lily Auction, and even though I have no space I keep buying -- right Michele? I think I'm up to nine I've gotten from Michele for spring delivery and still counting, and a few from some others too. But my excuse now is that I'm looking for some for my sis to give her for her birthday,

The Instant Buys that Michele (Tink3472) and James Hall (Mljomo) currently have are fantastic deals right now! And Mark Sattelmeier (Abundantdaylilies) also has some wonderful plants at great prices right now too -- and our own Fred Manning (Spunky1) has some terrific daylilies at great prices too! So I keep scanning the Lily Auction just about every day now to see what's up for auction.

Here are the Instant Buys I've gotten from Michele over the last 1-2 months:

ROSE F. KENNEDY - DF+
WHEN ROYALS DREAM - SF+
CAN'T TOUCH THIS - SF+
BARBIE'S FAVORITE - DF
DALE HENSLEY - SF
PRISCILLA'S SMILE - DF
BLUEGRASS MEMORIES - DF+
BARBARA MANDELL - DF+

And I just won LACEY LAVENDER for my sis through her auction that ended on Saturday. And all of these were incredible incredible bargains!

Mike,

Rainbow Make is dormant. I got it this spring and it is lovely. I'm hoping that it increases well cause I bet it is a knockout in a clump.

I forgot to include in my above post that the daylilies we won yesterday on the LA were from Abundantdaylilies. Mark sends great plants, and we are always pleased.

I got Rainbow Maker from Jamie when it first came out ( 2011?) and it is already a clump. Good increase here! Word of caution about Boogie Woogie Blues: Be sure to plant it full sun/ prime real estate area for it to perform well. I first put it in half shade and just moved it two years ago because it had dwindled away to almost nothing. It has taken this long for it to recover, but now it looks great.

I hope to list plants on the LA in February 2014, but my neighbor's car landing in the redone section of garden ( see below) has caused me to mark some off the list for spring. I had quite a few from this bed on the sales list but can't even get into the damaged areas to try to ID and put the markers back in. Most of the stakes were destroyed ( why wouldn't they be with a car driving over them and an 8' section of fence flattening them?) but most of the AAA markers survived. Problem is, I hadn't had a chance to re-do my garden maps completely after moving everything a few weeks earlier. Lesson learned!
The fence is still lying right on top of some daylilies. It is too heavy for me to move, and although the fence repair guys have laid the replacement posts in concrete ( last week), it is supposed to sleet /snow /rain tomorrow, so they probably won't be able to fix this until next week. Ugh. Some plants are out of the ground and it is in the low 20's - teens at night. Not optimistic about all surviving, but I can't get to them to fix until the fence is fixed. Oh well, there are a lot worse things in life than this, and I've realized there is nothing that can be done about this right now. Most of those that I'd planned to list from this section of the garden will have to wait until next bloom season just to make sure I get the markers back on the correct plants! .

I say "ditto" to what Julie said about BOOGIE WOOGIE BLUES. We have had the same experience here in our zone 7 garden. I moved it year before last after adding additional fans because ours had dwindled, too. This past summer it bloomed well, and the clump looked good finally. Best of luck with yours, Betty.

Julie, we are very sorry that you have had this damage to your property and daylilies. Let's hope that all the daylilies will be as resilient as we hear.

Oh Julie, doesn't that just make you sick? Hopefully all the plants in the ground will survive, but I know what you mean about having to wait until they bloom to make sure you have the right cultivars to list. And thank heavens your neighbor's car didn't land in your house!

Thanks for the advice on BWB it will be planted in full sun I already have a spot in mind. I am not sure how well it will do here in the north but decided to take a chance since it was very reasonable.

Oh Julie I am sorry to see the damage to your garden hope all of your plants make it and you can ID them.

I guess if there's a consolation prize at least this didn't happen the day before a national garden tour. Can you imagine all the work getting ready and the fence coming down in a New York minute?
In my case with Murphy's Law it would probably be a meteorite flying down taking out the yard.

Well we did have a Derecho that damaged most of our gardens the night before, 100 degree temps, and power knocked out for 3 of 4 tour gardens when my club hosted the 2012 Region 3 meeting . It did feel a bit like the wrath of God!!
