We have our first snow in a couple of years. Well, substantial snow ... several inches. Winter wonderland.

Plants are safely tucked back into the greenhouse at the farm! Crazy weather. More low 30s for us this week at night! But when I do plant out they'll all have row covers.

Rye winter cover to be cut.

And the seedlings waiting to go into the garden. Lettuce, peas, broccoli, cabbage, including Chinese, Asian greens, cauliflower and chard.

Thumb of 2014-03-02/abhege/615cbf

I got half the rye cut with the scythe then Ira offered to hook up the bush hog and finish cutting. Turns out Matt didn't want the tractor in there because the ground is still too wed and the tractor compacts it. Oops! Damage done so he used the spring tooth plow to stir it up. Now it's drying out then David will rototill. Problem is we're supposed to get rain at least two days this week. When am I ever going to get my things planted? Sad

Arlene, that patch of rye looks good. And all those seedlings to go in. OH my, that looks like a lot to plant.

I'm sure Matt would have liked it better if the rye could have matured, but I couldn't wait!

It is a lot of seedlings but the brassica will go quickly. The lettuce, now that's another story...but I like doing seedlings better than direct sow because I have a heavy hand! Hilarious!

It has gotten pretty cold here compared to the past few days so everything is on hold for now. I will use the time to plant more seeds and pot of more seedlings.

Rita, I'm sure Lily is keeping your mind off of the long wait for spring! By spring/summer, you'll have her so well trained!

I got my potatoes planted today. We got 5# Yukon Gold and 3# Kennebec. We also took one of our huge, concrete reinforcement wire tomato cages and wrapped it with weed barrier and filled it with a good mix of soil, straw, compost and grass. We're going to get another 5# of Yukons and plant them in the cage. I am anxious to see how well they will do. If it works, no more trenching for me!

Looks like we may be able to till the garden tomorrow and get some stuff planted. Nice day here today, high 60s and warmer tomorrow. No rain for a few days. With the time change I am planning on spending at least one hour, maybe one and a half in the garden after the baby is picked up. Mostly concentrating on weeding, mulching. I'll use the weekends for planting.

I planted three more kinds of tomatoes yesterday, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Barlow Jap and Zogola. My other tomatoes are ready to be potted up.

Maybe the next few days will be warm enough to melt the most of it. My peas in the guttering are doing really well! I'm going to try and trench and slip them out tomorrow. Plus I'll probably plant some more tomorrow.

Can't even get to the ground here to plant peas. I could plant the pots that I use for peas but it's too cold. Today was warm but tomorrow supposed to be 20 degrees colder. So too cold even for peas.

I'm thinking about starting some lettuce seeds indoors. Will transplanting cause it to bolt? I'm trying to figure out if I should germinate a bunch in a tray, or would individual paper pots be best?

I have never noticed transplanting to cause bolting. I would do paper pots. Much better in case you cannot get them planted right away. The ones I left in the plug trays are much smaller than those potted up in paper pots. They will catch up, but had I potted them up, they would have already been much bigger.

I planted some of my lettuce plugs today, where my onions didn't survive the winter since my lettuce row is still not tilled. Hopefully it will be by Wed. They are teeny tiny but should grow fairly fast now that they are in the ground.

Most other work in the garden today was prep work, tilling and raking, but one more raking and the broccoli row will be ready to receive plants.

Second row has onions and lettuce. These two rows are for corn later.

This is where the broccoli will go. Three weedy rows of garlic to the left. Priority for weeding!

Arlene, you look like you have things super organized to me. Great job. And here we still have frozen ground with snow.
