I appreciate your idea for those who want to trap and kill spiders. For other folks who have the 'live and let live' attitude, using a spider repellent spray made with essential oils may keep the spiders out in the garden where they belong. There are any number of recipes on the internet.
(That being said, I don't feel all that kindly toward cockroaches! )

No live and let live attitude here. Any spiders indoors need to immediately die. The faster the better. I will be looking for the those glue traps. Great tip!

My cats are good for more than just mice , they catch and eat the big wolf spiders that come in this time of year.

Any one try hedge-apples to repel spiders?

Cats are great bug catchers, but I don't have them any more so it's the glue traps for me.

Nice kitties and I especially love the name Scruffmonkey.

I use diluted white vinegar water around all of my doors and windows and on the steps leading up to the doors to keep spiders out of the house. True, I have to re-apply it periodically, but it's worth it.

I also wash the pallets that I stack my winter wood on with vinegar water. I haven't come face to face with a spider since I started doing that.

@greene ... for roaches ... When I was in college and lived at the beach in San Diego, the apartment house where I lived was totally infested with roaches. I went out and bought a gecko and let him lose. I had one very happy lizard and was the only tenant in the building who never had any roaches. I never saw him except for once in a while when I reached for something where he was hiding. Yeah, I did have to clean up evidence that he lived with me, but that was easier than dealing with roaches.

@RoseBlush1, thanks for the gecko info. I knew about them but my dog...well, let's just say I would be buying a new gecko about once a week. I use herbs now, placing them here and there. Once in a while, burn an herbal smudge. Would probably work for spiders, too.

Glue traps are a lot easier, and only need replacing once in awhile except in the fall, then they can fill up in about 2 or 3 weeks.

I get the rollypoly eating spiders (dysdera crocata) in the house and wolf spiders, but the cats usually take them out for me. But I do get lots of the woodlouse spiders because of all the mulch attracts the rollypolys by the thousands, so I get lots of spiders to take them out. In my roses I also get crab spiders. I accidentally brought this little guy to work earlier this summer.



The 2nd picture is the spider on a standard pen. You can see just how teeny it is.

Here's another crab spider on my Fragrant Plum rose. The 2nd picture also has an assassin bug in the center.

Toni, with the number of cats that you have I don't think you need glue traps!

I don't mind spiders in the garden, but I draw the line about having them in the house, my winter heating wood , the garden shed and the workshop.

Truth that! Keeps them entertained.. but I don't think the spiders care much for it. But only a few kitties go after the spiders. I've actually had a spider run right past Tara & she just watched it run past her and didn't even bother to stretch out a paw to swat at it. And she's not quite 3 years old! Now Conan, my 13-16 y/o cat, he'll go after them still, if one of the kittens doesn't charge past him first. And heaven help any moth that is dumb enough to wander into the house. EVERYONE goes after moths. A few years ago, we had a HUGE infestation of miller moths. I didn't have to feed the cats much that week...

After reading this ..... http://www.termite.com/spider-... I'm thinking I could use some of those traps. Do the traps kill the spiders or do they hold them alive until released? What stores do you get the traps at? What department in the stores? How much do they cost?

Marilyn, once the spiders check in they don,t check out, they are stuck until they die. I bought them at Canadian Tire, it's an everything store, hardware, lighting, gardening, sports, kitchen ware, tires, get your oil changed while you shop! Great place!! They cost $2.39 and there's 4 per package, they are made in the US, so I suggest you try places like Home Depot, Lowe's, or seed stores, I found them in the section where they sell mouse traps and the like, do not buy the large ones scented with peanut, they do not work as well.
