My Vandas are all pretty much flying free, too Tara. I got a bare-root keiki of V. Tokyo Blue a while back, and tied it to a small hunk of bark just because it looked better to me that way, but the bark is really not doing anything for the plant. Vanda roots do attach to things, however. I found some of the long roots of one of mine stuck to the trunk of a Brugmansia when I got home from a trip back in August. That was kind of surprising, but I guess in nature some types do that.

Lovely color on the blue Vanda there, Mj!

I came home from sailing today to find a new flower open on my favorite big NOID catt. This one's a lot redder on the petals than the blooms it had back in the fall. Two more big fat buds to follow . . Smiling

Hi All!!! So this is the new home for my little Vanda…Hi really hope it likes it! This was a rescue plant…from a bigbox store…So my fingers are crossed in hopes that it survives. I'm optimistic because the 4 roots that it does have are looking healthy, and 'greening' when i mist! And it does appear that it's producing a new leaf!

I did kind of 'cushion the area with a bit of 'Spanish moss'. Hope that's not a mistake!

I think they cannibalize each either, Kathy! I agree, one has to ever so often move them a bit to make sure they don't attach to the neighbor.

Tara, that looks great. Very soon you will see roots attaching to the basket and then hanging down.

Elaine, your noid Catt is sure lovely!

Rolling on the floor laughing Yes they can ! I have mine hanging off a limb under an Oak Tree, and I "thought" I had it far enough away from the tree. I caught in time, but it had reach over and had just barely attached.

Elaine, I agree that Cat is lovely.

Tara, you've got the right idea there !

I suppose that's one good thing about having to bring my vandas into the garage all the time (which I'm going to have to do tomorrow it looks like) - I end up moving them so much they don't attach to anything. Although, I will admit I have two that have somehow grown into each other and I can't figure out how to detach them. I don't want to hurt them and I figure I can deal with just two; I just make sure I move them like they're one plant.

I also leave mine bare root with the roots just hanging. Most are in baskets but a few are just free-hanging. I leave them however I bought them because I figure the growers probably know better than I do! So far I have killed vandas the least of all my orchids!

Tara - don't be surprised if you don't see much growth during the winter. While mine was indoors, although I sprayed it daily, there was very little root growth. In the Spring, after a few weeks outside the roots just took off. Now I have over 2' of nice plump roots. But I can tell she is not happy being back inside. After this next cold spell, I'll move her back to the humid GH.

It's quiet here today so I went out into the OC to see if I could find anything new. First up is a new spike and two new blooms on L. purpurata werkhauserie 'Monte X C. gaskelliana coerulea.

I took a walk out by the oak tree and found two Cyms in bloom. Here is Cymbidium Leodogran 'Cradlemont', a gift from Laurel some years ago.

Lovely, Jim. I am filled with awe and envy. Beautiful color on L. purpurata werkhauserie 'Monte X C. gaskelliana coerulea.

Lost my Hoku Gem 'Freckles' last summer to black rot. Crying Do I see in your pictures the corner of a wood mount, maybe? If I can get another, I will mount it for sure!

Also lost Little Black Sambo, sadly. I didn't make it to the orchid show this weekend, too exhausted after sailing on Sunday to try and score some end of the show bargains. We need to get to Apopka soon, and make sure Mr. Chapman will be there to sell us some more Cyms! I'll be finding out soon if I wasted my money on the bargain Cyms from Costco last year. They at least will have a bit more chilling this week, it seems.

Carol, did your gorgeous orange Cym from Costco put up any spikes yet?

Yes, Elaine, I'm also ready for an Apopka day trip. Anyone else?

My Pot. Hoku Gem in mounted on a square piece of tree fern and seems to be quite happy.

I agree, it's too early and also been cold - but there's Jim with flowers in bloom on his Cyms - out in his garden! I have not a hint of a spike so far and I'm 60mi. south of Jim. Still want to hear Sean Connery say "Leodogran Cradlemont" with his tongue tied Scots accent.

I lifted down little Bl. Richard Mueller for another photo since it now has two spikes open and a third showing color.

My Cym. Sara Jean doesn't even have a spike and it was blooming like crazy last year this time. I'm leaving it out in a protected spot that I can throw a cover over if it get's down to freezing.

And talking about mounting on driftwood, the Lc Mini Purple 'Shibuya' is growing on driftwood since the Spring of 2012 and the roots are truly well attached. I have another plant of this as comparison, it is miserably limping along, now bare root in a clay pot. I should have mounted it right away too.

Bert, I know there is a lot of confusion about these. I am fairly sure the plant I posted as Coel Unchained Melody above on Jan. 11 looks pretty much like your Unchained Melody.
Here is Santa Barbara's Coel Unchained Melody also

I can't really discern the difference in your picture, but you should be able to make it out?
