Actually, that was exactly how I grew this Lepanthes, in a glass ball.
Tillandsias really need a lot of air circulation, we even observed them growing on electrical wires.....I am not sure what else might like to grow contained like that, somehow I can't imagine any Orchid being too happy for a longer time in there.
Any ideas, anyone?

We had about 8 inches of light fluffy snow, we are shoveled out and it was/is gorgeous outside. A beautiful brilliant sunshine makes everything look clean and pristine!! The greenhouse still has some snow on it for now, but that is slowly dripping down the sides forming long icicles.

Hi all,
We had windchill of --16 last night so our pipes were frozen when we awoke. After a 6:30AM trip to HD for a better heat gun (my ancient hair dryer kept shutting off when it was hot) and a few hours of trying various pipes, we had the water running by 8:30 and now know exactly what to do if it happens again tonight. All orchids were watered in a timely manner.
We got about 11" of snow and we are done snow blowing with gorgeous sunshine streaming in, just like at Ursula's. I believe the coast got a few feet. School was cancelled state wide due to the cold.
I have a Lepanthes calodictyon. I started growing it in a one inch glass cube. It was happy and bloomed then started to drop leaves. Turns out it loved the humidity but not the lack of airflow. I have moved it several times. Right now it is thriving in the front of a shelving unit protected from the light of the long window by other plants with a fan blowing directly on it in intermediate temps and watered every morning. Hoping to get blooms sometime.
Black Jungle Terrariums has many orchids successfully growing in their terrariums and I haven't seen any little fans.

Maybe a Jewel orchid would work in a glass ball? They don't mind staying pretty moist all the time.

So right about the Tillandsias, down here they grow on the tree branches and absolutely do perch on the wires, and grow on the screening of pool cages, as well. Lots of air and drainage are necessary.

The snow sounds so lovely, but I'm still glad not to have to experience it first-hand. We have a lovely sunny day but very chilly and windy too. It's cold here when the high doesn't get over 60 . .. Smiling I have many orchids in the kitchen today. Any with blooms or buds got to come indoors last night.

Hi, I spent my morning at the lowes discount table. I got a few small pots of the same Rex begonia and put them together, they were 50%off and ready to bump up. I also really went to get a small fish bowl type terrarium and rocks so I could put my Begonia Caravan in a humid environment. Here my labor of love, I loved it a bit to much half of it got broken with my clumsy inexperience. The small leaf Jade was a Xmas gift, three of them in the pot, I think I will bonsai them tomorrow.
Elaine this all started because I was trying to get my humidity up in the grow room, and got a tillandsias in a ball from my niece. Plant was dead, but I was wondering what else could I use it for. I think I will have to wait on any pleurothalids until I get a GH.

Oh my gosh, I had to find where I put my jacket last year! I found it pretty quick, though. I'm a predictable kind of girl.

Anyway, I'm Facebook friends with Selby Gardens (in Sarasota, FL) and they posted a picture of something called a Sobralia orchid that is blooming today. Apparently, the blooms don't last long so they were telling everyone to come over and see it. This is the picture they posted on Facebook - all credit to Selby.

Good to hear from you, Kathy, and glad to know you are hanging in there.

That Sobralia looks like a Maxillaria at first glance.

I woke up this morning to 45 degrees and the news a lion had escaped from a sanctuary just north of here and is wondering about. Let's see, we have pythons crawling around in the Everglades, invasive insects spreading disease to our citrus, palms and avocados and now a lioness on the loose. On a positive note, the sun is shining brightly, the humidity is down and the warm up begins tomorrow.
Late news is they have caught the lion and put her back in her pen. 57 degree low in the OC overnight.

Melanie, Sobralias are gorgeous! We saw them in Ecuador blooming right at roadside! Truly lovely!! Lovey dubby

A Lion running around? Oh my!!

@901Bertwood, I will start up a new thread for the year regarding house plants. Once it is up, would you please be so kind and repost your lovely Begonias into the new thread, so I can delete your Begonia post here, please. Sorry, I have to do that.

So we can all enjoy our interesting (house)-plants other than Orchids in its proper place! Smiling

Good morning, with watering you get a moment to look more closely and this is my mystery this am. The sheath has filled but when looked at by light shining thru the sheath is actually empty, I have two like this I found this morning?

This is LC Eleanor Roosevelt '#15'. Like it is filled with gas. Any ideas?

Bert, I don't know why it would do that but leave it alone and see what happens. Keep us informed.

The are calling for an overnight low on Monday/Tuesday of 35 degrees. I'm beginning to worry.

Jim, hopefully everything will be alright in your area. I am glad I am not living in the Midwest of the country, the lows are truly insane for today and the next few days.

Bert, I wouldn't worry. Surely the sheath will fill out soon. Some things are better not watched too much…. Smiling

Bert, I've had sheaths like that sit on the plant for a month or two, even drying out and turning brown sometimes, then one day, Voila! They produce a flower stem. I learned the hard way not to ever cut them off!

Yes, I've deployed the big tent in the back yard, and am ready for low temperatures on Monday and Tuesday. Let's hope it doesn't stay cold for too long, we've had such a great winter so far . . .

My mango and lychee trees have grown so much in the last couple of years that I can't cover them any more. The magic number is thirty-two.

Jim, the seven day forecast on Tbo.com does not look good. Low of 32 for Monday and Tuesday! And I know it will be colder in Lutz and Odessa. Have to get the blankets out for the cattleyas; the vandas are already in the garage. In good news, my Arthur Chadwick cattleya opened. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow and try not to squish the flower with the blankets.

Any of mine with flowers open get to come into the house, Melanie. My bathroom and kitchen counters are very crowded some days . . . but I get to enjoy the flowers more.

Jim, I'm with you on the mango and lychee trees. My mango is just about to burst into bloom, too. Arg. Thick mulch is about all I can do. Luckily the lychee is on the south side of the house, so more protected. I have brugmansia in bloom, and 10ft. tall Shooting Star clerodendron with buds about to open, too. Crying

The orchids are enjoying their last night of warmth outside tonight. A little bit of rain, too!

Melanie, with the lake and all, I am in a warm spot here. It is usually a couple of degrees warmer than Tampa. I have a big stock of bananas hanging in the OC and another still on a tree in the garden. I will cut it tomorrow and bring it inside. I am not sure if I will break out the blankets yet.
