Linnea..thanks.... it's nice to hear about the shall I say.... misbehavior of the industery... and what one might watch out for ... it's so involved and at a point where there's so much done for their convience ... rather than health or taste of out foods

Environmental Working Group - EWG.org has a site where they publish the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15." They also have a "Skin Deep" database that rates toxicity levels in personal care products.

Personal care products are a primary source of water pollution, chronic and deadly illnesses.

Most people think things like shampoo ingredients are government regulated, but all the random chemicals dumped into the catch word "fragrance" are not. They are protected by Trade Secret laws.

We might want to grow those things that are the most poisonous and/or expensive to buy. We can have yards full of buried potatoes. They can even be left there for food emergencies.

All my veggies are gone for the year. Today really feels like fall as it is quite chilly. Still it was a good year and I got lots of good stuff. The big disappointment in the veggie garden was the eggplant. My eggplants did fabulously last year but very poorly this year. Summer squash, on the other hand, was fantastic.

Yeah, I got no eggplant, a few zucchini and a lot of summer squash.

Mostly, I did flowers this year. My best veggies are the brassicas that plant themselves. I am eating the best mustard greens I have ever tasted. I don't have a clue how they got here.

Pulled the last of the green tomatoes today. Found a few huge red ones hiding which was a nice surprise. Went to pull the Eggplant only to find 6 eggplant about 2 inches long. Eggplants have now been covered over. Pepper plants still going strong so they all got covered in plastic cages as well.. Greenhouse covers placed over two huge sections of Oregano. Kale, peas, mustard greens, Red Beet top greens, Swiss chard, Caribbean spinach and onions are on their own tonight if we do get frost. It will be sad to see the garden die off til next year. I can't complain as it was an awesome growing season for me.

The carrots and beets can stay out all winter if you mulch them a bit. Just pick the carrots before the ground hogs come out of hibernation.

Beets need a second year to make seed. It is good emergency tactics to leave some food in the ground.

I forgot about the beautiful Swiss Chard and beets behind the corn and squash mess of my garden. I think I will snitch some greens and straw mulch the plants for the winter. Smiling

This area where the grass seed is just coming up used to be one of my tomato beds. Will grow those tomatoes somewhere else next year as I wanted to make this spot back to lawn area.
