Are you referring to the (invasive in some areas) Dioscorea oppositifolia L.?

@ilovejesus (hello, I hope your weather is not too bad!),

I posted my question as a follow up to the original poster hoping @Seedsower would tell us exactly what she was seeking - whether for ornamental or edible purposes - perhaps by including the botanical name(s) so we would not have to guess or give wrong information.

Having the botanical name helps. Given a choice of similar plants, I would hope responsible gardeners would choose the non-invasive plants.

Dioscorea polystachya
Dioscorea batatas
Dioscorea opposita
Dioscorea bulbifera
Solanum laxum
etc.

As a side note, my neighbor thinks he is growing a 'pretty vine' and he regularly (and illegally) tosses his trimmings and cuttings into a nearby ditch Grumbling - out of sight, out of mind - thus setting us up for an invasive situation.

Hello...it's me! I don't know the botanical/latin name. I just know I used to buy Cinnamon Vine and Air Potato Vine on ebay, it covered my metal gazebo wonderfully. Thanks!

I know one of them had nice shiny leaves. I'm not particular, they wouldn't winter over during our sub zero winters.

I am not certain of the winter hardiness of Dioscorea batatas. I know the green is hardy here in Oklahoma & my Variegated one is too. And I have seen the green one growing very vigorously (weedy) here.

I will say that I do not believe Dioscorea bulbifera would be hardy, most people I know that grow this here bring bulbs in over the winter.

Sandi,

Did you found the air potatoe, Dioscorea bulbifera? I am growing one and have one potatoe for you if you still need it.
Here's a photo:

Hi Susie,
I don't know much about them and I don't know which kind of potato vine you have but I think you should wait a while regardless. You could start them early in pots to move outside later, but I would wait until late winter/early spring. They don't grow very fast until it gets warm but when it does they really take off and you won't have gained much by starting really early.
I left a pot of the invasive kind here (Dioscorea bulbifera) un-watered in an unheated and uncooled greenhouse for two years before dumping the soil out of the pot. I'm now fighting to eradicate them, so if that is what you have there is not much you can do that will hurt them. Other types are not hardy. If your friend is in your zone and hers come back every year that may be what you have.
