I hope so Liz. The pips should be fine, but the crazy plants that insist on putting out stems may suffer. We're going down now to 7 degrees on Wednesday night. They predicted 10 degrees for Wednesday night, earlier today.

Here is Dinner Plate, Do Tell, and TP Shimanishiki. I'm looking forward to see this tree peony bloom.

This is cheating a bit since it is a piece of a peony salvaged and planted in a large pot. The squirrels dug and destroyed the basic plant the same day it was first planted. The pot has been kept in the garage under a grow light and low heat.

Jerry, your salvaged plants looks like it is doing well. I wonder how large the roots will get, with the treatment it's receiving during the winter. The pip looks healthy.

If it survives the first year with a good, healthy stem, it should double itself each year for the first 3 or 4 years. I have had good luck with some and not so good luck with others. All this piece contained was part of the crown and no original roots. That is why I pinched off all the eyes but one.

Annette, good luck with your new growths on peonies. Hope they will be ok after this cold spell passes. Though it is nice to see that pips are already showing in your area. I also notice several inches of foliage on your daffodils which is nice to see that spring is getting closer. I don't think that I will see anything until March.

Jerry, I would be really interested to see the results of your salvaged peony. Please let us know how it does this growing season.

Thanks Karen! The new growth has been mulched, so hopefully the stems will be fine. The weather in GA can be so unpredictable. We've can have ice storms as late March.

Jerry, I wish you the best of luck with the salvaged plant. I agree with Karen, please keep us posted on its progress.

The weather here has been crazy. We were at 12 degrees on Thursday with a windchill of 0, and we didn't get out of the 20's.

I'm pleased up say that the peonies that I mulched did fine. Avalanche has grown beneath the mulch, but did not freeze, thank goodness. I checked on the other plants, and so far no signs of damage. It looks like we'll start warming up the 1st week of March, I hope it does.

I've left the plants mulched. We're only going to be in the 40's this week during the day, with most nights below freezing. 😔

So glad they made it through the crazy weather unscathed, Annette! Aren't peonies amazing in what they can withstand?

Liz, I agree, they are amazing plants. It hurts my heart to see all of the new stems that came up too early, that were killed off by the cold. Despite that, the plants keep growing as if nothing happened.

I doubt I'll see any blooms from some of the new plants that did this. Some of the new stems that were damaged had buds. Oh well, we'll see what happens when we truly warm up for the spring.

We are in a false spring. Temps in 30's and 40's. Snow melting everywhere. I have plants (evergreens) coming out of the snow where they are near rocks that warm them. We had so little snow it isn't taking much to melt it away. There is no way this can continue and when it gets cold again I do fear for my plants.

I can understand your concerns Mary. We've had the freeze and thaw episodes here as well, and the older plants are fine, it's the new plants that have grown when the weather warms up even briefly. I guess once they've been here for a while, they'll settle down.

We have been lucky here in that there was an early warming trend then went back to the old winters of near zero at night and barely above freezing for about 3 weeks. No end in sight. Should have excellent peonies when it finally decides to stay warm.

I spy at least 3 buds on that plant Celia. Looks like you'll be getting some blooms soon Smiling

Mary, we won't be out of the 30's tomorrow, with 1-7 inches of wintry mix/snow expected. We'll be in the 60's several days, starting next Monday. It's no wonder the plants are confused.

That sounds like a Colorado spring instead of a Georgia spring, Annette. I have that same frustration almost every year.....

This kind of weather makes me nervous esp. if it happens when the buds are developed and big. Though if they are just pips, I think they will be fine. Can't believe your area is getting 7 inches of snow today, Annette. And then to hear Mary saying that her area has been in the 30's and 40's and little snow, it just makes no sense. It sounds like the warm air is moving up north and the cold is moving south.lol I think east coast gets it really bad this year.

We got snow and sleet initially, and then it got above freezing and we got mostly rain that ended around 10 PM. They predicted we would have snow until 4 AM this morning, I'm so glad they were wrong. There's very little snow on the ground.

We're warming up into the 60's for 4 days next week, starting on Monday, then back to the 50's/30's in Friday onward. I'm going to uncover my mulched plants and treat them like springs here. I'll cover them if we have any expected prolonged hours below freezing.

It's down to 12F here with frost everywhere. I am opting for survival of the fittest. My peonies are covered with a shallow layer of snow so they should be just fine. And the evergreens seem tough enough to brown a little but make it through.

We've had snow 5 out of the last 7 days and are expecting more tomorrow! Can't even tell where my newest planting bed is since none of the shrubs are big enough to stick up out of the 8 inches or so of snow out there....SO READY FOR SPRING!!!!
