My peonies are still pretty much buried at this time. No growths yet. I wonder if they are actively growing roots below the soil.

Sorry Arlene, hope that insane weather you guys are getting clears up so you can thaw out.

Our ground is still pretty stiff and frozen, don't expect to see anything for another month or so.

Seems like quite a variation in weather in Colorado. On the hunt for a new home, but have to pick a state first. Starting with Washington and moving southeast from the coast.

Hello all, and sorry for not responding Liz. We've been out of town for the past week, and just got home from Maui this evening.

I've been seeing pips and stems with buds all winter. The newly planted peonies decided to grow, and of course, the stems that came up got frozen and killed😩😩

I've since mulched the ones that continue to add new stems, despite having been damaged. I'll have to check and see how they're doing tomorrow.

I did take recent pictures, I'll have find them so that I can post them.

Hawaii sounds great just about now. Hope you enjoyed your trip. And that your peonies recover.

My pips form on the top of the soil sometimes in fall and endure snow and then ice in the spring. But they never seem to get hurt. Which is amazing. Some of the peonies have an 'ice skating rink' around the top of the plant surface (surface above where the plant is) and it never seems to bother them. I stopped fretting about it a few years ago.

Peonies are plants that stand the test of time, enduring all sorts of weather related drama, only to come back better and stronger than ever.

I used to believe people that said peonies were tempermental and hard to grow. We had 3 growing in the grass when we moved into this house. I moved them w/o knowing what they were. I just dug them and plopped them in new spots then forgot about them. All 3 sent out new leaves and bloomed the next spring. I spoke to the previous owner and she didn't know the cultivars but sent me up the street to a gentleman who did. He gave them to her! He thought they were dead and gone. He was extremely happy I had rescued them. He and I exchanged ideas, plants and seeds for a few years but then he moved to be closer to grandchildren. I miss the old guy but his peonies still bloom! I have 6 varieties now and one tree peony.

As long as they are planted correctly and get the correct amount of chill hours, they are pretty much good to go for years and years. What a nice gift from a neighbor!

Don't forget adequate sun. They will still grow in shade but tend to be pretty wimpy. At least up here. But then our sun is pretty wimpy much less shade. Hilarious!

Hello everyone, here are some pictures from today. We're expecting snow on Monday, with a low of 10 degrees on Wednesday, and temps of 40's/20's for the end of the week. This does not bode well for the new growth. It will be interesting to see how these plants fare when spring try arrives.

I think your new growth will be fine, Annette. That happens to mine every spring and the only damage is drooping to some of the faster growing, early blooming varieties. Your pictures make me want to go outside and root around for signs of life!
