zuzu said:Wow! You got some of my favorite roses. I've had South Africa and Caramella for years, and Larissa has often tempted me when I've seen it on the Palatine site.

Garden of Roses is a Kordes Veranda rose (Cream Veranda), and the Veranda roses grow beautifully on their own roots, so you won't even need catch-up time on that one.

Hurray! Hurray!

Upon closer examination, I notice that only some of the canes on Climbing Cecile Brunner bear thorns. It will be interesting to see whether they show other differences to distinguish themselves from the thorn-free canes as they put on new leaves and bloom.

Dave - I have South Africa & Scentimental.. both are wonderful roses. I do notice, however, that Scentimental seems to attract earwigs, though. It has a very nice subtle scent, but crappy vase life & shatters quickly on the cane. South Africa isn't a tall rose for me, but, then again, none of mine are due to the fact I have to chop 'em all down in the spring due to winterkill. Not too bad vase life. You'll like that one. Smiling

You're going to love Caramella. Give it plenty of room, though. I had it and it grew to over 7' tall and about 4' wide.
The rose database says it's fragrance is "mild" but mine was powerfully fragrant, even in the midst of a humid sweltering summer, so it should perform well for you in Texas.
I assume it's a grandiflora because it grew so tall.

Nope, just a shrub. But that's why it gets so wide and never has the upright and somewhat narrow growth habit and "bare knees" characteristic of so many grandifloras. It's a beautiful rose bush and it gets covered with blooms. We typically have no rain between April and November, but when we have had freak heavy rainfalls during the months when Caramella's in full bloom, branches have broken from the sheer weight of so many wet flowers.

My Caramella grew to 6' the first year, and bloomed pretty much nonstop. I thought it was supposed to be a small shrub, so I placed it in front of a bed of small hostas. oops. I left it there, though, because it was so beautiful that it deserved to be front and center.
Today I uncovered my Cecil Brunner, and took a closer look. Sure enough, all but 2 of the canes are thornless, but there are 2 that have thorns here and there! Other than the random prickles, the cane looks just like all the others on the plant. It isn't coming from any deeper, and I don't think my plant is grafted anyway.
My Crown Princess Margareta grows this way also. The majority of the canes have no thorns, and a few have big thorns widely spaced. Other people told me it must have been mislabeled, but everything about it is exactly as it should be. To me, it has a wonderful scent, yet other people say their Crown P. M. has no scent. I wonder if mine is a sport?
This year, I will pay attention to the blossoms on the thornless canes and compare their scent to those on the thorned canes.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

zuzu said:In my garden, the blooms of The Fairy are much smaller than the Cecile Brunner blooms, so bloom size should be a good indication of the one you have.

I'm bumping this thread because this rose is now blooming. I wonder if this gives us the info we need to get a full ID on it.

Given a choice of The Fairy or Cecile Brunner, I would choose The Fairy. I only have the climbing Cecile Brunner, but she blooms a much paler pink and has longer, less shiny leaves. The blooms on my specimens of each are much the same size.

Is the fairy fragrant?

I would love to go rose shopping for Chamblees $2.50 clearance roses. I grow mostly own root roses.

I just added Garden of Roses (aka Cream Veranda, aka Joie de Vivre) and South Africa to my Chamblees wish list. Caramella was already there.

My wonderful new neighbor just rode his riding mower over the tiny stretch of grass in front of my front flower bed. (Actually my front weed, rock, dying poison ivy if the spray works and tree stump bed). The people in my new neighborhood are so nice!

@dave if that Larissa you bought decides to bloom, ahem, we have no photos of that rose in the database. VERY large "hint, hint!" Green Grin!
