I think it would be awesome to have a forum dedicated to planting and ideas for growing in apartments and other small spaces where there is little space and nowhere to plant in the ground. Not sure if anyone else might be in my situation, but I am in a small apartment with a balcony.

I like the idea; the information could be of use to many people. Even though I have room outside for a garden, I am often looking for more room inside to start seeds and to overwinter plants.

Wouldn't that sort of be a duplication of the Houseplant forum, tho?

Not quite, people with houses have many options for windows (north, south, east, west), most apartments face one direction, which poses issues with lighting. Also, not all apartments like you to hang things from the ceilings (like mine). It poses a very different situation to be in an apartment.

@Zorki: you might want to start a discussion in the Container forum. Start a new thread with the same title you gave this one and see who chimes in.

Good suggestion. And that way, if there's a lot of interest, you can give dave a nudge. Smiling

Okay, my two cents.
A houseplant grows in a house. Assuming that the owner of the house also owns the plant, it's all good. No harm, no foul.

I think the OP is talking about an apartment where the landlord is 'King' and does not want water damage, holes in the walls, a mess/eyesore on the balcony...etc.

I have looked at the Container Forum and it's not exactly the same thing.
A dedicated thread just for apartment dwellers might be a good thing. (I know this because my dad was a landlord and later in life I was a tenant. Sheesh, it was such a small hole in the wall...what do you mean I don't get my security deposit back?)

We don't have to guess. OP here specifically is looking for a forum dedicated to gardening in spaces where:

there is little space and nowhere to plant in the ground

That could be an apartment or, as the subject line says, any "small space."

Did we ever decide if there's enough interest for the forum?

Dave, I think that would be a really good addition to the forums. There are lots and lots of folks who don't have houses and/or outdoor space for gardening. Growing plants for them can be a real challenge. Heck, the vast majority of inner-city dwellers would probably fit that description. How many million are we talking about here? Sticking tongue out

The more I think about it the more I feel like our containers and houseplants forums really should satisfy the desire for this kind of discussion.

I like the idea of a Small Space Gardening Forum. It might be a crossover to the other mentioned forums but many forums already cross over each other anyway.

I bet we could draw more visitors to the ATP site with such a forum and a bit of advertising nodding

I couldn't get permission to copy a photo of this, but I'll describe it and provide a link.

"The flying soda bottle flotilla"
"wall of bottles"
"100 bottles of pop on the wall"
"I did it sideways"

Someone made hanging planters from 4 or 5 bottles (2-liter soda bottles) hung sideways on two wires running [u]through the bottles, near the cap and near the

Each bottle has a rectangle cut out of its uppermost side for the plant. I couldn't tell if they drilled drainage hole or how they handled dripping.

Then they made a "wall" with 6 sets of those hanging planters, around 3 dozen bottles.

That image is by no means exclusive to the site you linked to. It's all over pinterest and everywhere else on the web.

Tsk. Rick, what are you doing over "There?" Hilarious! Regardless of the source, tho, it IS a cute idea!

Ahh, good. I changed my link.

It combines three of my passions:
- gardening
- never throwing anything away
- doing something different

So the claim is that a Small Space forum, the Containers forum and the Houseplant forum are so different that they each deserve a separate forum, and that there will be enough non-crossover traffic to warrant each.......

My single vote is no.

But renaming the Containers forum to read " Small Space and Containers" forum might be an option.

That sounds like a decent compromise to me, but then, I don't live in an apartment.
