I hope someone can help. I bought some Asiatic, Oriental, and trumpet lily bulbs. I haven't planted them yet, but they are starting to grow. It will be a little longer than I expected before I have a place to put them, so I was thinking that it would be a good idea to pot them up. I only have 1 gallon nursery pots. Will that work? And how deep should I plant them in the pot? I can keep them in the greenhouse until the ground is ready.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Natalie, the one gallon pots will be fine. Plant with a good draining soil. The bulbs can be planted 4-6 inches deep. The bigger the bulb the deeper you should put it. Water the pots deeply at first but don't keep them to wet afterwards because bulbs like to rot if kept too moist. Also that's why you need a good draining soil and a pot with adequate drainage. You can plant them in ground after threat of frost is over and you've hardened them off a little. You can also wait until fall to replant on a permanent spot you've chosen. Good luck!

I'm just wondering Natalie, how cold is it over there and how long you think you're gonna have to wait till you can do some gardening outside?
Over here, it's kinda warmish and if I had lily bulbs, i'd plant them directly in the ground. Spring is definitely here !
MY mind would think it's pointless to pot them, water them and then dig them up and re-plant them a couple weeks later.

When you say that they've started to grow ~ how tall are the sprouts? Just nubs or is there leafy growth?

They've only grown an inch or two at this point. My problem is that I have to fence off a new garden area and remove the lawn, and it's a very large area. I know that the bulbs aren't going to take up a lot of room, but the entire garden area is going to take a lot of work. The weather hasn't been cooperating much, so just getting the fence up is taking longer than expected. I have to keep the dogs out of the area, and also need to keep the deer and bunnies out of the area. So, I have a lot of work to do. I never plan things well, and I shouldn't have bought the bulbs, but I couldn't resist them. I'm not sure what our weather is going to be like for the next couple of months. We just moved here at the end of May last year. We bought the place before that, but I haven't been here in April, and was only here for the first 10 days of March. So, I don't know what to expect between now and the end of May. It's been raining almost non-stop for the last two weeks, and our weather report has a couple of night down around freezing during the next two weeks. I do have a greenhouse, but it's more of a coldframe since it's not heated. I also have a shop that I can put them in at night, and have a heated bathroom in there, if that helps.

Keeping them in the fridge will buy you a some time, especially if the growth is just nubs. Don't store them with apples in the fridge with them.

Well, if it's not only depending on the weather, but also the work you need to do in the garden, you are the one to know whether it will take really a long time. If yes, I'd say you could pot them. If you have the means (pots, dirt, space, etc).

Or you could find a spot in the garden, just big enough for these bulbs, plant them and enclose them somehow if you are afraid of dogs/rabbit damage. And work your garden around them. They will bloom nicely... and even if you need to move them somewhere else in the fall, I'd say it's better for them in the garden than in pots.
