Natalie, the one gallon pots will be fine. Plant with a good draining soil. The bulbs can be planted 4-6 inches deep. The bigger the bulb the deeper you should put it. Water the pots deeply at first but don't keep them to wet afterwards because bulbs like to rot if kept too moist. Also that's why you need a good draining soil and a pot with adequate drainage. You can plant them in ground after threat of frost is over and you've hardened them off a little. You can also wait until fall to replant on a permanent spot you've chosen. Good luck!
