Someone gave me seeds for this vine, sounds like a troublesome vine on the internet. (Don't plant near trees, house, do plant where it can be pruned, has support, etc) anyone grow it, if so where?

Some trumpet vines are notoriously difficult to control. The only place you might have limited success is in a large, open area that gets regular mowing. Even with regular mowing these vines will travel underground unnoticed and pop up everywhere. We're still doing battle 15 years after "removing" one from our flower garden area.

All three seed plants I received are in some way a problem. Also got lemon mint ( don't like mint plants) , and orchid tree (no where to put it that I can see from the house)

I suppose it depends on your zone re whether trumpet vine is a problem or not. I planted one at the base of a porch pole support and ended up digging it out because it never bloomed (I gave it a good 3-4 years) and it also didn't really grow up the post much - seemed to want to splay out laterally and weave its way around our lower rock veneer. Since digging it out, I've perhaps had a couple stragglers pop up, but nothing major. I don't recall what cultivar I had, which would also play a part in my rather poor experience with this plant.

If that's Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans) it can be very difficult to control and eradicate if planted in ground. You might want to try a container with trellis.

I was considering that, but the suggestion was I get one without a drainage hole. Still trying to solve that one.

IDK if they are the same orange flower, but our trumpet vines can take over the forest! I have pulled out vines with a 3" radius off a full grown pine tree because it was choking it.

I would be inclined to re-gift the seeds.

About the only way I can see this working is to plant it in the center of a lawn area where you can mow regularly and provide sturdy support - similar to the way some people can actually contain the invasive Wisteria.

That being said, the first time you step on one of the dry seed pods in your bare feet, you'll be ripping the plant out anyway.
So, re-gift the plant sounds like the way to go.

I have kinda learned that if seeds or cuttings are given to me in generous amounts, most likely I will be doing the same kind of sharing in due time.

I have it planted by the dog run fence. I actually wish it would cover more of the fence. I suppose one reason it hasn't is because the fence is hotwired top and bottom where it is and I keep forgetting to "weave" it away from the wire

How long does the vine get? If Ikeep it cut to 6' or so, will it still produce flowers?

Mine isn't all that big and it blooms every year...some of the pictures in the DB link posted are mine. I really like the blooms

Again, it is so dependent on your climate. I have never thought of wisteria as invasive...

Me either, thou I live in tx. I do see it in patches of trees, but don't know it it does any harm. Always thought it looked pretty.

I've always heard that Chinese Wisteria (C. sinensis) http://garden.org/plants/searc... is invasive most everywhere but the American Wisteria (C. frutescens): http://garden.org/plants/searc... doesn't cause problems.

Do they look the same?

Anyone know if the vines themselves send out roots?
