About the only way I can see this working is to plant it in the center of a lawn area where you can mow regularly and provide sturdy support - similar to the way some people can actually contain the invasive Wisteria.

That being said, the first time you step on one of the dry seed pods in your bare feet, you'll be ripping the plant out anyway.
So, I agree re-gift the plant sounds like the way to go.
