Thanks Ric.

I can understand wanting a tree peony garden, once you've seen them in bloom personally. They are addictive, just one plant is never enough. I wish you the best of luck with your new peony bed. Working with red clay soil has been a chore, but once amended, the plants do really well. I would love to see the progress of your new bed as it comes along.

Thanks also for mentioning the Tree Peony Garden nursery, I've been to their site, and they have some amazing plants at reasosable prices. I envy your closeness to them, and the ability to personally pick up your plants Smiling

Hi Diann,

I use pine straw for mulch around the peonies, but not on top of them. I know some folks mulch over them during the winter, but I leave mine exposed so that they get the proper chill time.

LOL We had no problem with proper chill time last winter up here. Our lilacs set bud for the first time in 3 years, but the last Arctic blast we got froze them resulting very few flowers and blacken tips. I will post more as we construct the bed and plant it.
The last Holly talked to the people at the Tree Peony Garden, they said this years listing of offers should be posted about July 1st.

I'm planning on moving this NoID tree peony later this year into a sunnier location. Is the graft location at the top of the swelling in the photo below? If so, will putting it 4-6" below ground cause any problems? Is late August a good time to transplant?

Planting the TP deeper will not hurt it. I am surprised you haven't had herbaceous growth around the TP. TPs are ideally moved once the vegetation starts to turn brown and fall off (signal that the plant has gone dormant). And remember, they don't like to be moved once planted. It may not bloom for a year or two. Also, the root mass looks like it will be considerable. Dig the root line even with the shape of the plant with leaves. If any of the root mass separates from the mother plant, you can plant it and it should grow. Good luck.

Thanks much! Would full or partial root pruning be helpful?

Don't prune anything that you don't have to.
