Carol - Epi oxy blooms during the day??? that's so unusual, it's almost like you have won the lottery!!!

I really don't know much about growing Epi, but I do know that my pinkish red Epi does not mind if I move it around a bit... my epi oxy, on the other hand, is so finicky, once I moved it a couple of times, but only within a couple of feet, and it dropped all the buds except for one!

Clementine, It only did that the first two years after taking the cutting. I've never heard of that happening either. As I said, I haven't seen it bloom since, because I'm not going out there with a flashlight. I have a couple of pics with the bees on it somewhere. I'll have to find them and post. Mine has been in too much shade for the last few years, but I just moved it. We'll have to see what happens.

Sounds good Carol Big Grin

I'll have to get outside soon and take some pics of mine once the buds open Big Grin Yesterday Oxalis 'Sunset Velvet' opened the cutest bright yellow flowers, it looks stunning against the bright orange foliage! Also Sinningia 'Lisa' is about to pop open a flower Thumbs up I'm gonna go take some pics before I head off to work.

Yes Carol, but for oxy to do that a couple times is pretty amazing, it likes you... It sure is a drawback to have to stay up all night to enjoy the blooms... maybe CA sun is much stronger, but here mine doesn't mind to be in full sun, so far... I hope it will do well for you now, after being moved...

I have seen them in full sun here. They bloom well, but the leaves are pure yellow. I'm going to have to move mine again. Here is the pic of it with bees on itThumb of 2011-04-21/ctcarol/d3d609

I'll put the rest of my Epis in the "Show us your garden" thread

Carol, I love it.. so pretty and delicate looking... mine doesn't have the pinkish tint like yours though, perhaps the sun is stronger there... I was just looking at the other epis you posted, they are all gorgeous... your garden must be so colorful right now, enjoy it...

Thank you! Epi season is so short, but so worth the wait! The rest of my garden is being typical of this area... the roses bloom one at a time , the daylilies, one at a time, etc, etc. My theory is that in the northern ,short growing season, the flowers have to bloom all at once, giving wonderful displays. In our longer season they take their time. That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it! Big Grin I've had one lily bloom, and finish already...the rest are not ready yet. One day lily has been blooming for a month...the rest are just getting scapes. I always look at it and think "I'll take a picture when this, or that is blooming", but when this or that blooms, nothing else is blooming. Oh well, at least I have SOMETHING in bloom all year, and can enjoy all your wonderful spring gardens.

For Epis, yes, for most things not really. Our annuals are often perenials, and vise versa. There are those plants that give their best flush in spring, but then wear themselves out by blooming off and on all year. Then there are those that just hang on and will never bloom because they need the cold, dormant period. Of course, I DO tend to push the zones...like the Paeony I planted two years ago. I expected it to rot but it keeps coming up in spring. I seriously doubt it will ever bloom! They sell Shasta daisys and Tuberose here too but I've never had one bloom for me. It's all about micro climates and soil here. This is supposed to be a "mediteranian climate", but even my lavender only lasts a few years. Thumbs down

Just noticed that my spiny red Epi opened! It has 3 more buds. This is one that I brought into the warmth.

Ya... I've given up on Annies. By the time she has the plants available, it's too late here, and she ain't cheap! She does have some plants that you can't find anywhere else, but I wish she would sell the seeds, so I could start them when I need them. If I ever get up to the Bay area, I would sure like to see her nursery though!

Ok, kathy, we've got to talk! When I bought Couranti and Stern von Erlau, I was looking for a true red! I like the bicolors, but I really prefer the pure colors. Is that as red as it appears in the pic?
