Me too. Almost like the butterfly was posing. I missed a great shot of it on the Tiger Eye sumac a little later that day - it was really pretty against the foliage color.

I got an ID on the wasp. Looks like it may be Polistes dominulus, a species of paper wasp. I need to look around outside a bit for a nest.

My butterflies never open their wings when perched and I have a camera ready.

Gleni - absolutely true. That's why I was so pleased to get these. This butterfly was literally vibrating most of the time so I had to be quick to get a shot of it holding still. I've been trying to figure out what it was doing - it would perch on the phlox and flap its wings rapidly. Does anyone know?

and I don't really know, but I think they are hovering and positioning their proboscis and drinking nectar while flapping--I have seen them do that and move between flowers within a flower. It seems like when they hit a 'mother lode' of nectar then they will hold still and drink before moving on

I'm curious--how does a person tell a honey bee from other types of bees? (aside from the honeycomb, of course)

You're welcome! Because my dh & I used to work bees, besides the fact that growing up dad always has us a hive or 2 or 3, I just inherently recognize honey bees. I never thought about what exactly is different about them opposed to other bees & when you asked the question, I realized I could not enumerate the differences. So, it was interesting for me to look it up too. Everything they say in there, I knew but would not have been able to state.
