Nothing better than a good old tomato sammich for lunch!! Hurray!

Would that be with mayo or Miracle Whip? Hilarious!

Mayo! And I prefer "Duke's"...it's a Southern thang, ya know.

Today's Tomato Sammich of the Day was on toasted all grain bread, delicious New Big Dwarf tomato slices sprinkled lightly with salt and fresh ground pepper, Duke's mayo, thin slices of left over Bratwurst, and a fresh peach on the side. Yumpin' yiminy...ain't nuttin' better for ya!

Yes indeed, Duke's it is! Don't like to use anything else myself. And once people try it, they generally can tell why. I'd rather have that tomato sammich and a fresh peach over a steak or a piece of beef anytime.

Do you have more pictures of your greenhouse(s) and herbs or are those on another forum?

I've never had much luck overwintering the rosemary plants indoors, either -- even in our sunroom I don't think they get enough light (maybe under my fluorescents would be better?), and I think the dry winter air also takes its toll on them. I have a couple of really nice plants growing right now that I would sure as heck like to keep going if i can, so I hope someone has some good advice!

"Do you have more pictures of your greenhouse(s) and herbs or are those on another forum? "

Tee, I'm sure I have oodles of pics on my computer. As topics come up I'll try to post relevant pics as needed.

Sandy/weedwhacker (by the way, could you please come to NC and whack some weeds for me?) :>)....

Rosemary is a bit finicky in most winter households. The air is dry due to heat but yet at the same time it (rosemary) doesn't care for humidity for fear of getting mildews and mold. I don't grow it in the house (too dry) nor in my shoffice (wood heat, VERY dry) but if I did I'd only water it sparingly, soaking the pot it is in once, then let it completely dry out before watering it again. It should also not be placed near a heat vent, which would dry it out too much. As for sun, in a sunny window is fine but keep in mind too much of a sunny window may be too hot/drying so you'll need to check the soil as needed. Lastly, keep in mind, what may work for your winter growing may not work for someone in NC or Texas since the length of daylight will vary as well as the intensity of the sun. If it were me, I'd baby sit your fave rosemary, take it outside on nice days, even if only for a couple hours. (Fresh air revives us all, eh?)

Shoe (thinkin' he better pot up one of the rosemary plants and bring it in this winter, just for personal experience)

Lee~ I meant that dollar general has huge flower pots for $10. I've had mine for years, very durable. It's what I plant my herbs in when I can't get a garden done. I was also saying that I used my rosemary frozen on the bush up through January in zone 6 when I was Arkansas. (It was really a zone 5 winter that winter.) It really keeps quite well for cooking outside through most of the winter up to zone 6 (in my experience). I was suggesting that you get a couple pots and purchase some rosemary plants somewhere and get some good healthy vigorous growth going in order to have some rosemary to last through the winter. Then shoe offered you up some plants......
I shall henceforth count you all as enablers of my collecting \"disease\".

I've managed to overwinter rosemary the past couple of years by digging up the entire plant and potting it into a large container in the fall. Before the frost hits, I bring it indoors under the lights. Self-watering containers seem to work well for me to give it the humidity it needs.

I also tried overwintering a plant in a cold frame last year. In spite of our really frigid Zone 5 winter, and tons of ice/snow, the plant did great. I put a little straw around the plant for a little extra insulation.

Shoe--what a beautiful greenhouse!

gosh, I'd be happy to, Shoe -- do you think I can bring my machete on the airplane?

All things considered, I think my best plan for the rosemary might be to (1) get an ARP plant (do I get that from AARP?) and (2) overwinter it by planting it right next to the foundation of the house on the east side and covering it with a good layer of mulch. And I think I'll try keeping one inside, under a grow-light, in hopes of having some fresh rosemary to use during the winter.

I brought my rosemary in 2 years ago to winter over when I had surgery and would not be able to do much myself, but I never took it back out. It loves the south facing window that I have it in, but I make sure that it does not sit with wet roots and I keep it trimmed. It grows prolifically and keeps me in rosemary year round with no problem. I love my rosemary plant.
I tip my hat to you. Group hug

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

Okay, I decided to move one of my plants into the sunroom now, hopefully it will acclimate while the weather in and out is fairly similar and then move into winter a bit more gracefully. I'll add a couple of pictures here tomorrow for comparison, and keep you posted on how they do!

Ya know, I've tried to propagate my rosemary a few times, now, with no luck whatsoever. I will try your hint, Shoe, on layering, but has anyone been able to start it in soil from cuttings?

Kevin/Lee, I have the Arp cultivar , I'm in 7a - I think what has helped is that it's planted a) near my house and b) on a slope so even in the winter it doesn't sit in any wet soil for any amount of time.

This is one of the *very* few things that makes me long to live back in Arizona. It grows like a weed out there.
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.
