There are some Purslane/portulaca photos that have accidentally been given the incorrect latin name. It is a very common mistake and I would like to help identify them correctly.

How do I go about doing this?

I have only submitted photos to the data base and left the details to the "powers that be" but a person on the Purslane-Portulca forum (where I am a moderator) pointed the mistakes out to me and I assured her we would take care of it so ATP was in the know. Green Grin!

Help! Thank You!

Becky, are they the two images you submitted? I was unsure if it was something you added or someone else added, couldn't tell from your first post.
http://garden.org/plants/brows...
(By the way, are these your personal images?)
If they are your images, you enlarge them and then copy the ATP BB Code right above the image and paste it into a new thread in the IF Forum so it looks like this:

If you want to remove them from the database until you can get the correct ID, again, enlarge each image, scroll down and proose the deletion with a brief description for the database moderators.

I'm not communicating clearly. Whistling

There are many photos on ATP (posted by many users) for purslane and portulaca that have been given the incorrect latin name. I want to be able to correct this. How do I do it?

I am not talking about only my personal photo's but the latin name that has been given to them.

For example, the photo above is not moss rose or Portulaca grandiflora but it is P. Umbraticola.

This mistake is being made all over the web and I would love to see ATP have all photos in this category correct.

There are three main species for Portulaca which Purslane is listed under:

P. Orelacea = wild plant with small yellow flowers that is edible
P. grandiflora = showy, many colors, spikey leaves, double blooms. Also called Moss Rose all over the world. Known as Portulaca.
P. umbraticola = showy, many colors, paddle shaped leaves. Known as Purslane at nurseries.

These are all kissing cousins but it would be nice to adjust the names and all I want to know is how do I help to fix this?

Becky, you can propose that the misidentified images be moved to the correct entries or you can start threads for each of these images in the Plant Photos Forum to alert the image owners to the misidentification so that they can propose the move themselves.

Becky, I "think" what you need to do is this:

go to the plant whose name you want to change

go to the bottom of the page and click on "edit plant name"

You will be able to change it to the correct name. Submit it and one of the admins will approve it.

I think you'll get an acorn for each one you do, too! Thumbs up

If I have given you erroneous information, Sue will let me know *Blush* *Blush*

Thank you ZuZu for getting me. Rolling on the floor laughing

I still am not familiar with the exact way to do this: do I go to each photo that is incorrect in the data base and post something? I am short on time and so whatever you think would be the easiest way for me to do, I would appreciate a shove/nudge in that direction. Green Grin!

Vicki, we crossed paths here. That sounds easy enough.

I will wait for Sue to let me know if this is the correct way to do it. And I am all about acorns. Hurray!

Yes, Becky. You'll have to do it for each one. Click on the misidentified image to enlarge it, scroll down to "Move this image to another plant," click on that, fill in the name or the plant ID number of the new entry, and submit the proposal. When it's approved, the image will be moved to the correct entry.

Thanks ZuZu.
One more thing:
There is no category in the plant data base (that I see) for Purslane or Portulca. I am referring to the list on the right when you go to listings in the data base.

Just move the photos, Becky. Changing the names of plants is something you might not have to do. I'm currently comparing our list to the listed entries in the Catalogue of Life and I'm finding some synonyms and some missing entries. I'll fix all of those today.

Only the custom databases are listed in that box, Becky. Just search for Portulaca, click to view all of the plants in the genus, and you'll see all of the listings.

I want to sigh or cry. I truly am not stupid but the data base is foreighn territory for me to work in.

First, none of my purslane photos are even in purslane but are in portulaca.
So I found one of mine and there are many in the same listing of others. I can't figure out what to do.

Maybe I need a nap. Hilarious!

Okay, I just found one of my photos and tried to edit the name and when I clicked submit a note popped up telling me this plant is already submitted or something. I should have copied it.

Purslane is not the name of a genus. The plants in our database are listed by genus. Purslane is a common name for plants of the Portulaca genus.

You have only posted two purslane images and both are in the entry for Portulaca grandiflora.

You're trying to edit the name instead of moving the photo. Don't edit the name of the entry.

I know this must be frustrating for you. Why don't you send me a tree-mail and tell me which photos have to be moved?

The name is incorrect. That is my whole point in this. I am trying to help clear up the latin names.

IT IS NOT P. grandiflora
It is P. umbraticola
