I would say that many of my lily stems this year are about 2/3 the normal height that they normal are with some exceptions of course. Being that I had a very cold winter and a late spring, would the quicker increasing temps cause the lilies to stop growing height wise and go quicker to the blooming stage? I know that lilies can vary in height from year to year but it seems that a majority of bulbs that I've had for more than 2 years are short. Just a few thoughts.........

My experience has been that a cool Spring seems to bring shorter growth-- and, especially if it is a cool, dry spring. On the other hand, a warm spring seems to bring taller growth--and again, especially if it is a warm, wet spring. Just my conclusion based on association. This year when I look at the 'overall', I believe they may be a little taller than average here. But, I've had pretty much an ideal spring as far as lily gardening goes with just the right amount of moisture.

I should note I have a couple exceptions where I have some real turkey-necks on some very large fall transplanted bulbs. Since these were in an area ravaged by voles, I going to assume the main section of these bulbs was damaged but they shot up a spindly stem from a small developing offset somewhere within the bulbs themselves.

This is an interesting question. I just heard from a lady in northern Wisconsin who says all of her newly planted Fall bulbs were taller than she has experienced before. I wonder, also, what everybody else on this forum is experiencing this year.

Glad to see you've got your thinking cap on, Joe!

Once the full vernalization requirement is met, I don't think there is a correlation of height to cold winter temps, unless the plants were cold damaged. I had a very very very long cold winter, but the minimum (temperature) wasn't below normal. Isn't that the same as you, Joe? Even though my spring was late (temperature wise), overall my lilies are taller than usual, I think, due to the abundance of moisture. And I just got 2.9 more inches of rain yesterday.

While the number of leaves and buds are largely preprogrammed in a bulb, how they develop is most dependent on the current conditions during time of expansion.

I had a 'short' summer this past year in the southern hemisphere. Stems were all about 2/3 of normal - except for newly purchased and potted bulbs, which I assume were normal heights for those lilies - some of them being really quite tall! I figure it means I didn't feed my poor babies enough the season before! Hilarious!

Minimum what Rick? Temp?
Lorn, I would say we had a cool and dryish spring for sure.

In addition to some short stems, my lilies are way behind this year too. Normally I have my first in ground blooms the last week of May. None so far and I'm still probably at least a week away from it too. This winter really changed a bunch of things this year!

Relax Joe, it's only June 4th! Every year is a new experience with gardening and sometimes things don't always progress as we anticipate. Give it time! No rush here--I don't mind being the last float in the parade.

I'm always the last float in the parade, because the soil freezes so deeply here and I winter mulch heavily...... But this year the ground thawed under the snow, so I'll not be as late. I have a couple martagons showing color in their buds.

Now I'd love to see a lily-float - a parade of lily-floats! - to celebrate summer. nodding

I took my first load of potting mix down to the new garden yesterday. I can officially continue repotting at my new home! Though goodness knows how long before I'm living there.... I'm really hoping to be set up by two weeks post-solstice so I can start the seed-sowing season in good time.
