Find members close to me by ZIP code. I really liked that feature on the now going downhill fast DG. It's nice to know other gardeners that live close to you but don't necessarily frequent the same forums as tastes differ. Plus when we start having ATP Roundups we can blast all the people in a certain state or area with the info!

Yes, I always appreciated that feature. It can be so hard to find members close by when you don't live in one of the areas that traditionally had a lot of DG members.

That's something that I'd like to think about. It'll be challenging to get there, though, because right now I'm not capturing anyone's zipcode, although I am indeed giving people a place to enter their location.

That may not be enough. Paul's location, for example, is "Eastern WA" which is too vague to be useful for calculating distance. So I would have to make some architectural changes to ATP to accommodate this nice feature request.

You'd just about need to ask for a postal code to do it, I suppose, or at least a city, state and country. I put in "Eastern WA" because no one knows Richland or the Tri-Cities, as we call it. And I have to say WA or people mistake it for the District of Columbia. Western WA is a different world entirely for growing plants, with its rain and mild temperatures. We get 7" of yearly precipitation, lots of river water for irrigation, and large temperature swings.

If I plug "Eastern WA" into my algorithm, I get coordinates back that are pretty near to Spokane. I'm not sure if that's enough granularity.

Would be kinda cool if you could merge the USDA Hardiness Zone map with a ATP members zip code list and ID every member (who opts in) in a growing zone.

I know... in my wildest dreams. Seems it would be very complicated Confused

Dave, good enough for me. I have more in common with Spokane (~2 hours away) than most anywhere else. But I would be more specific about my location if I knew there was any reason to.

If there is a way to do it without broadcasting my zip code to the world them I am all in. For personal reasons, I dont want everyone to have instant access to my exact zip code, so there should be an opt-out option for people who want to stay private.
Maybe if we could locate people by state....instead of zipcode?

I use Planet Earth for my location for privacy and safety issues. I don't mean to insult anyone here in the world of Dave and Trisha's sites, but so many people use the internet one can hardly be too careful. Dave and Trish have no possible way of screening who signs up on the sites to see if they are good or bad. They just have to take them at their words and trust GOD to help them catch anyone who is up to nogood.

Just a suggestion, but if one wants to maintain privacy one should not include their last name & state or town or even proximity to another town. Too many tools on the Web to make a "search" really easy. Zone would be enough or, of course, first name and zip code would be OK.

Ha! while some zip codes may include a whole state, I live in a tiny little county that has about 5 zip codes, maybe more. California could easily be 2 separate states, and zip codes only have meaning to the postal service and realtors.. The rest of us go by drive time. Hilarious!

Ahem, I would just like to get out in front of this issue and say those aren't weeds in my yard, they're "volunteers". Yeah, "volunteers", that's the story I'm going with.
