I'm down to my last couple of buds on the brilliantly colored 'Mary's Gold', and I am longing for more of the same - by which I mean more blooms with that brilliant color and garden presence.

I like large flowers on tall scapes; I would like better bud count and branching than what I get on 'Mary's Gold' (the possibility of rebloom would be nice, too); I demand flowers that can handle cold nights and which always open well (EMOs would be ideal, as would be flat to gently recurved blooms), and as I don't spray, I would like some degree of rust resistance, too.

Am I asking for too much? Rolling on the floor laughing

Please bring on your suggestions for tall, large, beautiful golds!

I don't think you ask too much at all Big Grin ... coming up with ideas is fun, even if they may not immediately match the picture of what someone is looking for in their mind's eye.

So, to help narrow down what shades of gold might be in range, to ask what bud count and branching you had with Mary's Gold, to find out how tall is "tall" and how large is "large" to you (the same as MG or more than MG or?), here is a sampling of similarly sized cultivars. One is nocturnal, and all but one are dormants like Mary's Gold ...

If you are looking for height/size similar to Mary's Gold (pictured first, for color and form comparisons)... here are some that were reported as having some resistance to rust:

LOL! Rolling on the floor laughing You are right; I guess that I should have specified what "tall" should be... and what "large" should be... and what "gold" means...

Thank You! for your suggestions!

I have 'Sears Tower' which is sort of a golden yellow polychrome (colorwise it looks similar to the image of 'In the Clouds'); while it is tall (registered at 72" but it is in a pot here and so not that high) and I like it, I think I don't want many daylilies that are that tall. Rolling on the floor laughing

So to be more specific...

Height-wise somewhere on the order of 36"-42"? 'Mary's Gold' is registered at 34", and that clump is almost an ideal height here.

Bloom size, anything 6" or bigger. UFs are fine so long as they are well behaved (not looking wild and wacky and different every day).

For color, I would like to match 'Mary's Gold' - which is a "golden orange" (not orange, not yellow, not golden yellow). Absolutely brilliant in color.

The only other daylily I have that comes close to it in color is the old gold self Munson 'Burmese Buddha' (which does not seem to like its shady location, and which also has a plainer flower and low budcount). But that is gold, not golden orange.

Dormants are fine here - in fact, I am beginning to prefer the dormants to the other kinds. The foliage looks so good in the spring!

I tried a search on the database, but my skills are obviously lacking. The best that I could come up with was Morss' 'Midday Sun', which is described as a "yellow gold"... hmmm.

(I did order 'Twenty Carrot' (which is described as a "gold self") last fall, but somehow the plant got lost... Glare I guess I am going to have to order it again... )

Your DB skills are superb - Midday Sun looks like the ultimate match! Though it does not have formal rust testing itself, most of its ancestry does and almost all did very well for resistance! And, there is a nice picture from the hybridizer for Twenty Carrot at http://www.daylilies.org/Dayli...

I'll go back to edit out the skyscrapers in my first post, to leave more room as people come to the thread to make additional suggestions!

Am I losing my mind? Confused I could have sworn the only daylily pics in your first post were of all those tall golden yellow ones... Confused Blinking

I did a quick casual search for 'Midday Sun' but couldn't find it for sale. (I do have the hybridizer site link for 'Twenty Carrot', but thanks for the AHS link.)

Fascinating that your list of golds includes 'Jerusalem', which is an ancestor of 'Midday Sun'.

I did find a source for 'By Myself'. The size and height are about what I want; I will take the bad (older form, no rebloom) with the good (rust resistance). In the short term I will (hopefully) have more brilliant gold for the garden; in the long term maybe I can make some crosses... Whistling

Thanks again for your suggestions! Lovey dubby

While not gold-orange, for some reason or other I decided to go look at the Ashwood daylilies, and I found this:

It has the size, it has the height, it's a polychrome (I love polychromes also)... it just needs a push more in the gold-orange direction...
