Thanks Elaine! When I bought it, it had about five flowers on it and they were all a little different. They guy who sold it to me said it bloomed for him several times a year but I think he was feeding it steroids. I mean, it does bloom for me but not like what the seller was describing. Then again, he was trying to sell it. And there was a lady there listening who was going to buy it if I didn't and she was all bummed out when I did. The orchid world is a cutthroat place!

This little Encyclia bracteata hasn't quit blooming since last Winter!!!
This one doesn't seem to have a distinct blooming season.

Oh, I love that mix of Encyclia in the same basket. Next time I repot mine I'll see if I can do that! Only . . . I don't think I can extract my Enc. tampensis from its tree branch, since it has attached itself very nicely to the tree.

Very nice colors on your Lc. Lory Ann 'Paradise', Melanie. It seems to get better with age. I could be easily talked in to meeting Elaine down at Tropiflora in October. We should plan on it.

I agree with Elaine. Love that mixed basket of Encyclias, Ursula and that is a nice gold color on the Vanda.

About the mixed Encyclias- some years ago I picked up a small plant labeled as Encyclia tampensis 'Chocolate', and yes there are certainly chocolate notes in the scent of this mix, but in the process I picked up at least 2 different Encyclias. I have to check blooms from earlier years, I seem to remember a third Encyclia in there as well.

Yes, and the idea of planting them together is a good one. I want to try that.

Opening yesterday is Bc. Maikai, now known as Bsn. Maikai (B. nodosa x Gur. bowringiana). You often see varieties of this but here is the original.

Update on Trichoglottis brachiate (aka Trgl. atropurpurea) which has opened some new flowers.

Love that Trichoglottis, Jim. He has a bit of a grumpy face, but a really cool lip and fabulous rich color.

In your last picture, is the long vertical chain of leaves growing upwards or hanging down?

Where'd they come up with Bsn. as an abbreviation for B. nodosa X Gur.bowringiana ?

Beautiful, Jim!! I really love the Trichoglottis brachiata, plant and blooms!

We just got back from our place in Pennsy, where we spent a couple lovely days. After the Soccer game I will look what's in my camera, I took tons of pictures - the Platanthera lacera were in bloom and we had a pair of gorgeous (perhaps) Herons visiting our pond.

Elaine always asks the hard questions. OK, it used to be Brassocattleya [Bc.] Maikai (B. nodosa x C. bowringiana). Then they changed the species C. bowringiana to Guarianthe [Gur.] bowringiana. Combining a Brassavola with a Guarianthe, they came up with Brassanthe which is abbreviated Bsn. That must be the truth because I can't make something like this up.

And the afternoon rain just started.

As for the leaves, this plant grows just like a Vanda except the leaves are about the size and shape of crape myrtle leaves but thicker, like a succulent and there are no stems. Perhaps these pics will help.

Lucky you on the rain, we have no clouds or rumbling at all this evening. Guess today's another good day to fertilize the orchids, it won't get washed off!

The Platanthera lacera are blooming now in NE Pennsylvania!
And there are budding Epipactis helleborine along the path through the woods, and more!
Have a look! Smiling

I was watching two buds on my Cattleya forbesii and, coming home yesterday they had opened!!
This plant was part of the order from Ecuagenera at our visit to their greenhouse last Summer. It is small and came mounted on bark.

Love the little Catt, Ursula. The flowers look like antique porcelain.

My big NOID catt has all 3 spikes open now, the whole cage smells like spice cookies! Plus, another sheath is popping buds today. My cup runneth over.

YUM, Elaine!!

I wonder if I should start a new thread for this, but - I have been subscribing to the magazine of the AOS/"Orchids" since 1993 and I really had to clean up my shelves upstairs. So, I bagged them and I am somewhat unsure how to proceed: I find that I rarely dig out old magazine to reread them, especially since so much information is nowadays on-line.
The question is: do I throw them out, or is there any interest here for them? They are pretty much complete/minus perhaps 2 or 3 magazines throughout all those years from 1993 to 2013.
If someone here would pay for the postage, or even better - pick them up in person, I would be happy. Better than throwing them out.

Ursula, in 1999 I donated my orchid library to our Memphis Orchid Society, including over 21 years of the Bulletin. 600 books and Mag, there were many new members who needed them and really could not afford membership (at today's price of 65 for single membership, I think that would be true today). This was before Internet look up ability, so they could follow along better in the society members discussions. But there are times when I need those books myself, each time I try something new.

Hi everyone! I've been busy trying to get ready for my vacation (started Friday). I'm off until August 4 and trying to make the big push to complete the greenhouse.

Today Paul and I were caught by the rain and HAIL and had to take shelter in the shade house. Here are some snaps! And I forgot to take a photo of C. forbseii. I'll have to get one later today. I don't remember the names for these guys, but if you want to know I'll dig them out of the database.
