It's a beautiful day here today, not a rain cloud in sight and comfortable temperatures.
Looking into the cage, V Ratchaburi Beauty and Peddler's Velvet Gold are starting to bloom.

And the second spike of the alba Schomburgkia superbiens opens this week. It is a bit breezy, so taking pictures was a bit of a challenge with those extra long wiggly spikes.

Blc Copper Queen I got from Ken last fall has opened its first bud just this afternoon. Last year this division of the plant had much more yellow flowers than the one he kept, but this one seems to have 'reverted' back to what it should be, slightly coppery. We'll see how the yellow comes in as the flowers age, of course.

I love the alba superbiens, Ursula.

I like that copper color on the Copper Queen, Elaine. Good one.

Elaine, it does appear to have reverted back. Your plant never had anything closely resembling copper/orange. As the photo I sent/posted showed, it was a lemon yellow from the get-go.

That's the wonderful mystery of orchids, I guess. Maybe if it blooms again in the fall we'll see the yellow anomaly repeat.

Yes, nice color on the Copper Queen now. How much sun does did this plant get?

Thanks Jim!

Morning sun through the cage screening. Afternoon filtered to full shade. There's gotta be a reason.

When the plant grew this pb that has the bloom on it now, it was cool Florida weather, warming up towards summer.

When it grew the pb that made the yellow flower it was warm weather cooling down towards fall at Ken's house. A little less intense sun there than here.

BUT, didn't you get this plant from Lindsay? She showed flowers of the coppery/golden color, too. In NC. Here's her thread The thread "I'm downsizing my collection!" in Orchids forum

Oh yes, Ken! Smiling

Thanks Elaine!

If the plant gets so much sun, that the leaves are also colored fairly darkly, you might see equivalently also darker colors on freshly opened blooms. It least that's how mine behaved. ( ditto for Pot Hoku Gem)

Let's see if I can recall, Ken feel free to correct me. Ken got a big plant of Copper Queen from Lindsay last year in May when she was 'downsizing'. He divided it in half some time in there, grew it through the summer, and both divisions bloomed in the fall.

One 'sister' had the normal coppery flowers like mine does now. The other sister had yellow flowers. Ken posted them both, and we were wildly speculating as to how that may have happened. In the process, I said I really liked the yellow one and Ken offered to sell it to me. Since I was thinking of ordering a bunch of plants from him anyway, we went ahead, with a promise from me to follow up when the Copper Queen sister bloomed again. So - here we are!

This morning, backlit by gentle sun through clouds. This one's reminding me a lot of Frances Fox!

Your story is correct, Elaine. All the guesses as to why the two divisions would have completely different colors assumed that the conditions were different when growing them. The problem is that they grew side-by-side after division and the growing conditions were identical.

I need to contact Lindsay and see if she has any plants she might want to trade. Every plant I got from her (when she was downsizing) bloomed but the Copper Queen division is the only one left.

All beautiful, Elaine!

Ah yes. And I read you! Smiling Also, I found part of the discussion in the meanwhile - Post #529114 posted by Ken on Dec 22. 2013 and following. Smiling

Since my Copper Queen bit the dust following my attempt to divide a very overgrown plant a couple of years ago, I had to pick some older pictures. Perhaps you might find them interesting to see some differences in color.
Just for the fun of it one can compare the sun intensity of our locations by looking at the latitudes - ( this was prompted by looking at the fairly light ( I thought) of Elaine's pretty blooms, compared to what I remember of my old plant. Different clone or -
looking at it in high Summer - the intensity of the sun here in NJ is 85% of that in Florida and 94% of the sun intensity at Ken's home. Now if your shade cloth or similar is higher than 15% and 6% respectively, then that would say that I grow my Cattleya at higher light intensity than both of you. ( only the "cut of glass" and outside the large grid of the cage.)
Interesting?

Talk about a "virgin". Almost pure white. I love it! What is the plant on the far right-hand side?
