Winchester: Magical & Mystical (Part 1)

By NEILMUIR1
July 20, 2010

The first enclosure at Winchester was built in 150 BC during the Iron Age, at the same time that a trading center was established. In 70 AD the Romans arrived and called Winchester "Venta Belgarum - marketplace of the Belgae," a regional capital. Then in 410 AD the Romans left and the capital collapsed. In 648 AD the first minster was founded as Christianity came to Winchester, now called the old minster. After the City's surrender to William the Conqueror in 1066, he started to build the present cathedral. The history of what was once the capital of England is so great it would need two lifetimes to even learn it all!

Dear Linda, thank you very much for your comments. Winchester is not very old to some places, it is because it is so condensed that people like the City centre! It makes it easy to see a lot in a day, though most people only ever get to the Cathedral, which is a shame. There is a mass amount of beauty around Winchester, unfortunately the Tourists are not interested in nature or wildlife.
That is why I have done two Articles; the City centre and then outside the walled City with its wildlife and then how the people live! I live on a tight budget so can only do so many Articles, so this was an opportunity I could not miss. Plus I love the place as well, which does help.
As you may realize there is only so much you can put on an Article or people get bored, I already put a lot of pictures on all mine so did not do the other side of Winchester!
Glad you enjoyed it though and look out for Part 2.
Regards.
Neil.

Actually, I would rather see the back parts of the countries. So much more personal than seeing what everyone else see's! The main parts are beautiful, but I like to see how the locals live!

Dear Linda obviously I cannot take pictures of their Houses, as that is not nice! But i do think you might enjoy the area the locals love!

Thanks Neil, I meant visiting local bars/pubs and shops, that most visitors don't know about.
