I'm trying to look up daylilies with red and yellow blooms. I get nothing if I check just those two boxes, and only three listings come up if I just check the box for red. I still can't figure out how to use this tool.

Any ideas?

It is looking for plants that match ALL of the terms you check off. So if you check off red and yellow, then it will only show you plants that are both red and yellow.

Thanks Dave, but I know there has to be more than three red daylilies listed in the DB. That's ultimately the most confusing part for me.

Just to reiterate; red was the only box checked on that run. No other boxes at all were checked off.

Unfortunately not all the checkboxes have been filled in for all the daylilies. While we do have the color description text field in there, very few plants have had the details checked off in the primary fields. I should get on that one day.

In the meantime, while this is an imperfect solution, try searching for "red" in the "Color description" field.

Chelle, instead of checking off colors use the "Color description" field and type in "red yellow".

That's exactly the advice I needed.

Some of the color descriptions in the daylily specific section are listed so differently that you couldn't just automatically fill in a check box for the primary color in that lower generic section. For instance, a hybridizer may describe a red bloom as crimson, maroon, burgundy, etc. Or a description may say 'reddish violet-plum purple with darker band of plum with multiple rings of black-red, violet and plum with a pale yellow etching line in white'. How can anyone pick just one primary color?
(I doubt there is one listed like that, I am exaggerating but I hope you catch my point.)
Or a blend of color listed as yellowish peach and pink blend. So what do you check off as the primary color?

Now for some of the basic 'red bloom' descriptions, those can be checked off in the generic plant section.

So true, Sue, but I just knew that there had to be a way to get more choices to come up. I knew I couldn't possibly get them all, but I needed to be able to find at least one that had the look I want so that I could ask others about similar plants. So many times, I find one I really, really like but then can't find a supplier, so I needed alternate choices.

I've now spent more hours than I care to think of looking for a line on just this one type of plant; all stemming from a picture on a greeting card!

Can someone tell me how to find the area in the database to do an advanced search? For instance I type in Daylily and I get this: http://garden.org/plants/searc... but I do not see a place that says advanced search. When I type in Hemerocallis, I get this: http://garden.org/plants/brows... and I still don't see an area to do an advanced search. What is my foggy brain missing?

Go to the front page of the database and over on the right click on "Daylilies" to go to the front page of the daylilies database. Then from there click on "Search by characteristics" and you'll be all set!
