The Crystal Palace & the Park (Part 2)

By NEILMUIR1
August 24, 2010

I do hope you enjoyed your first tour of this stunning place. Now let me show you what happened on the night of October 30, 1936 as disaster struck. Coincidentally, New York's own Crystal Palace met a similar fate in 1857. There is also a lot more to the Park than you may think. Get your picnic hamper ready and let us see what else we can find in this amazing place.

Dear John, Battersea Park is on my list of the 1, 471 London Parks! I too love the place, but I was going to leave it till the spring as it is starting to get a bit late now, and although it does have a good Autumn show, it looks better in the spring! I did put your name on the bottom of the Article, as I was hoping it brought back some nice memories for you and I did find it great that you have a Crystal Palace sort of society\club in Japan with people\friends who were from the area.
Whilst I was there they were having a protest about yet another property Developers company attempting to get some of the land at the top where the Palace was to build on, so I signed their petition sheet! It would only take English Heritage to classify it is a listed and it could not be touched, but they are too busy listing blocks of 1960-1970s flats at the moment to do anything about Crystal Palace which is a shame. There has been a plan put forward to rebuild the Palace using modern materials, but making it look the same as it was! It would be stunning and regenerate the area, however half the money has to come from Business which has already been promised, so now they are waiting on the National Lotteries decision, who take a long time as they probably are not sure of giving £67.8 million to the project.
Thank you for your comments and I will not forget Battersea Park as it was in my top five anyway.
Kindest Regards.
Neil.

Closely guarded secret! Yes Sharon I am indeed originally from England. Born in Devon and moved to London at about 11 years old. I like to think of myself as an international person, having traveled the world and experienced first hand different cultures. Many people here take me for an American, even, Aussies and Brits I guess I have many American friends even though I have never set foot on American soil! An ambition I will probably never realize. To be honest I would love to be an American and live in the USA, I love your culture and style, and profound belief in your country, just a few years too late I guess. Crying

Dear Charleen, Linda, Lucy and Sharon. thank you for your most kind comments. I am glad you enjoyed your tour of this stunning and unique place. It was also a pleasure to write as I know the place well and I used to fish there when I was young. It was great to find that John (pajonica), has many friends in Japan from around this area, and indeed he did put on a post that he met his first wife in this wonderful place. So at least I hope there was some nice memories for him.
Thank you all, week off then back to do some more work on Articles!
Regards to you all.

Neil, somehow I just Knew Battersea park would be on your agenda. What a wonderful place it is. I think one of London's best! I so love our parks, they are the green places where Londoners can learn about nature. My childhood was spent in Devon, so many London kids never have this experience, our wonderful parks can to an extent give them an insight into living in the countryside, the very best place in the whole world to live, as I now do.

Dear John, I agree with you! Now with the Green movements rise in political and other matters, they have insisted that some of the top Colleges and Universities help out the Parks who are on a limited budget. For instance Crystal Palace Park had a children's zoo, but it was deemed too expensive and was closed down. So one of the Green MP's told Capel Manor a very famous college of Agriculture, if you want your budget then reopen the Park zoo as a farm so the children of London can see what a farm looks like. They have done a good job of it, and many schools now visit the farm in the Park as it is called on a regular basis. Dulwich Park has help from lots of Colleges and other places and have set up wildlife areas, and all sorts of things for the children to learn about!
Also at Crystal Palace you can go on a Horticulture course learning all about how to grow and plant things at all levels, this is a good idea as it involves Parents and their children!
Regards.
Neil.

A truly wonderful thing for London's kids, High time importance and resources were placed in these areas. London's parks were deemed important by Victorian society, they seem to have had an insight we have lost.
You know Londoners have no idea just what they would miss were they to do as I have. London has the potential to be the finest city in the entire world, it's such a pity they don't realize it!

Dear John, I am only too aware of what you have just said. Unfortunately for the greedy Business men, Parks hold little opportunity to make money. As you know the Victorians made laws that have never been changed to ensure they were to be kept as Public Parks and they did indeed put a lot of money into their beliefs about education, health and fresh air away form the factories.
A Business venture could not charge anyone from entering the Park, so could not make money. Also the law has changed in that there must be Disabled Access if it is deemed safe. This has been done in the Royal Parks, and most of the Borough Parks in London, and is only right in my view. There would be nothing money wise in it for a company having to do this.
The Concerts and music events were in fact stopped at Crystal Palace as a company got the contract to hold them. However they insisted that all places that sold food in and around the Park be closed and stopped from selling food, and they were the only ones allowed to sell it! This included people bringing their own food and eating it whilst sat on the grass. They lost the case in court and the contract. You are not allowed to drink Alcohol in any Public place, unless it is permitted, like a Cafe etc that sells it. So the days of people drinking a lot in the Parks has gone, as if you are caught and you will be, the fine is quite hefty. However the cafes and restaurants, sell wine and beer etc to have with a meal.
Unfortunately it is hard to get Gardeners as well now. This goes back to the Victorian belief that Gardeners and Labour were cheap, so the money for a Gardener still goes back to that belief.
A youngster can earn more in a Burger outlet than going to college for five years and working as a Gardener!
Regards.
Neil.

Yes Neil once again you have writen a wonderful, informative story of the past, it is sad that such a beautiful place had to be lost, the grounds are still wonderful, and I can imagin myself going into the Park to eat lunch, and stroll by the water, watching the ducks. You make it all come so alive, thank you.

Dear Doris, it was a pleasure to do something for someone as wonderful as you!
I am most sure I could make a nice picnic for everyone to eat in the Park on a sunny day, there are plenty of seats everywhere.
I am glad you enjoyed it as it brought back memories for me and another person.
Mind you Doris, there is a good pub at the top of the parade that sells Fish & Chips and does pale ale, plus it overlooks the Park. Maybe a better idea than a picnic?
Regards.
Neil.

Dear John, the names may have changed but the pubs are still there! The one on the corner is the Royal Albert and still sells mild and bitter. The other one on Anerley hill is now called the Grape and Grain. There is the White Hart in Norwood and the Alma is still there. The Gypsy Hill Tavern and The Conquering Hero. The Cambridge, Colby Arms, Railway Bell and the W.G. Grace. Plus of course the Crystal Palace Tavern! There are many more but the names may have changed!
Regards.

Dear Nancy, thank you for your kind comments! So you do not fancy the pub tour then? Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
There are lots around Crystal Palace believe me, and into upper Norwood, Penge, Anerley, Clock House etc.
Just aim for a church and you will find a pub near it!
