I like sliced tomatoes to help moisten my sandwiches and find the 'on the vine ones' acceptable if I let them ripen for a few days before eating.......

That's what I do too. Give them a couple days on the counter and they ripen a bit more.

I managed to find some heirloom slicing and cherry tomatoes at our winter's farmers market last week. Greenhouse grown, but better than anything I can get at the store. They were actually pretty tasty.

I still have a (rather small) bowl of cherry tomatoes from my garden on my kitchen counter... Smiling

and it will be quite some time before I cave and buy a tomato at the store... after all, it's only 8 or 9 months until I'll get my next ripe ones from the garden Rolling on the floor laughing

The Australian Koels, large migratory cuckoos, have eaten 100s of my cherry tomatoes. I am not too happy about it. Usually they do not find them to March.

Glen, can you cover the plants with something? (like netting, floating row cover, etc. ?) On the other hand, cherry tomatoes are always so productive that maybe you have enough to share without missing them! Smiling

I am so glad I froze all those little yellow cherry tomatoes this year. I only wish I hadn't gotten lazy in the end and let so many return to the earth. A pint carton dumped in a kettle of homemade soup just puts it over the top.

I puree'd a bunch of tomatoes and froze them. Theys sure are good in soup too. I think that's a lot easier then canning. I might do more of that next time around.

Sandy, I only need a few cherry tomatoes a day to keep me going. I had bought a dehydrator, however, to deal with the large crops I have. I was looking forward to a new adventure.
Even so, I am not too worried at the moment. I am having more trouble convincing my birdo friends that these shy cuckoos are getting stuck into my garden close up. These black males are difficult to photograph.
