I got this noid den in March 2013, from another friend in another plant forum, she gave up on it, so I took it in. No name, so all I know it is a dendrobium.

So have been observing how it grows. This week I noticed this growth in the top middle part..is that just the cane growing taller ..or is it by any chance going to do a spike? Confused

Perhaps those with better eyes than I can answer that, but for me, only time will tell. My Den. will form spikes from the terminus as well as below terminal leaves. Sometimes the canes will have more than one stem.

Looks like a bloom spike to me. Suggest switching to bloom booster fertilizer if you have not already. You may want to go to the AOS site and look for "The Orchid Clock." It is a good article and tool to help track the various growth cycles of you orchid and to know which fertilizer to use for maximum growth on bloom production.

Your Dend. looks very healthy. Good growing,

Bud

Looking good, Tarav.

My (standard) dendrobiums bloom in the summer and nothing is even in stem right now. I have a huge specimen plant with canes that are 3' tall and had multiple stems that were another 2-3'. The basket weighs at least 25 lbs. I am trying my hand with compact size dendrobiums since my over-wintering space is limited. I have a couple dozen of the compact size plants. I haven't seen any sign of stem formation though. I think they may be spring/early summer bloomers.

Yes, my other dens, are Spring bloomers..I used to have a Den smilliae which was a summer bloomer, I feel bad I lost it underestimating its need for warmth during winter, coz the Spring bloomers were okay with our winter temps here..oh well... live and learn..that's why I adopted this noid Den..so this one is turning out to prefer Fall. I learned my lesson, so I kept this indoors last winter.

Just excited right now.. it will be my first time to even see what kind of bloom it is making..seems like it will only bloom altogether, not one at a time.

If it does like mine, you'll have incremental blooming with the stem lengthening and new buds forming for weeks. That means weeks of flowers! Hurray!
